Drums on the Ohio Offers Inspiration as Well as Skill

When North High School band director Steve Shelley attends the annual Drums on the Ohio event, he sees it as a learning opportunity for his students.

"We encourage (band students) to go as a group," said Shelley. "This gives them the idea about what our programs will be patterned after."

This year Drums on the Ohio celebrates its 30th anniversary, with the event to take place at a new location — Central High School. Event chairman Brian Price said six drum corps from around the country, with roughly 100 members each, perform as a stop for their season.

The corps performing this year are the Blue Devils, Blue Stars, Memphis Sound, Spirit of Jacksonville State, Revolution and Troopers. Each offers a different sound and style of music. Each one picks and chooses its favorite corps and sound, Shelley said.
