Beatrix Drum & Bugle Corps from Hilversum - The Netherlands will appear in a new uniform this year. What the outfit will look like remains a secret for now: "The hat will remain, but otherwise?" During last year’s training weekend, after being asked to put all mobile phones and cameras away, the new uniform of the corps was presented to the members. However, curious drum corps fans will have to be patient for a little longer, because the corps will only show the uniform to the public later this year.

This month we spoke with Brian Mason, the Santa Clara Vanguard percussion arranger, and Jeff Lee, Electronics Composer/Coordinator, about arranging Bartók for percussion and electronics. We caught up with Brian and Jeff after the February camp at the SCV Hall.
Bartók for Percussion
While Bartók may pose challenges in arranging for brass, the selections from this contemporary composer for the Vanguard 2010 show support the percussion arrangement quite well. Brian Mason, percussion arranger, spoke about how the music for 2010 is very different from last year’s Copland piece— “the phrases are shorter, and the melodies are broken into smaller components, giving it a rhythmic quality and a different type of musical line.” At the same time, Jeff Lee, the electronics composer/coordinator, pointed out that a challenge in arranging the show comes from having to break up what Bartók created as a logical progression, and not getting “too academic” about the arrangement. “At some point,” said Jeff, “you just have to step back and listen to the entire arrangement.” Brian added that there are moderate tempos available this year that have opened up possibilities for the percussion.’

Dear Parents, Volunteers and Friends of The Cadets,
Good afternoon! My name is Justin “Rudy” Heimbecker, and I serve as the Assistant Director of The Cadets. I also have the privilege of managing the full summer tour, living the full 90-day experience on the road, with the team. I marched with the corps from 2003-05, and I now work with Melissa Babalonis (94-98 alum) in the Allentown office. We have the unique opportunity to give back just a little bit of what was given to us during our time with the corps...an unparalleled, life-changing experience...

As a teenager, Edward Dalton could hear from his parent's home the punchy brass and rhythmic drum sounds of a few dozen musicians rehearsing a few blocks away.
He finally got the nerve one night to visit the practice site of the VIP Drum and Bugle Corps at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church on Morris Road in Southeast Washington. "I loved what I was hearing," he said.
Dalton made his way up the hill to the outdoor rehearsal space and was given his instrument of choice, a contrabass. "I carried that instrument almost everywhere I went," he said.

A week of 70 degree weather on the Northern California peninsula that parallels the west side of San Francisco Bay, preceded the Vanguard's third 'winter' camp on February 19-21 at Woodside High School, just west of Redwood City, CA.
Although rain for the San Francisco Bay area was predicted for the weekend, everyone knows that the weather can be wet on one side of the bay, while relatively dry and sunny on another. This was the case for the Vanguard. No one could remember if the corps had ever held a camp at this location, but thanks to the work of the current band director (and father of an SCV pit member), the organization has another fantastic new venue to consider for future rehearsals.
