Today on Field Pass, the third of four in a series of profiles on the new DCI Hall of Fame Class of 2008. In this episode, Dan Potter interviews Jim Campbell, a professor of percussion responsible for much of the modern look and sound of today’s drum corps percussion ensembles. With a legendary background as an instructor and arranger for the Guardsmen and Cavaliers from the ‘70s through the ‘90s, Campbell currently serves as professor of music and director of percussion studies at the University of Kentucky.

Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, Ill. will be the site of the first OnQ Music & Marching WorQshop event of the 2008 summer season. Hosted by the university, the interactive educational program will take place from June 29 through July 1, and will feature two of the elite World Class corps of Drum Corps International, the Bluecoats and the Cavaliers.
“This WorQshop will set a new standard for the summer music camp experience,” said Gary Doherty, executive director of OnQ Performance Education. “The event will draw upon some of the nation’s finest music educators, combining their expertise with the talents of two outstanding ensembles. This will create a unique opportunity for students to be informed, energized and inspired.”

Lots of drill, a parade, finalized music and a new CEO - what an April camp!
This past weekend, Vanguard Cadets camp saw great success as the corps learned thirty pages of drill. They also split tiime reviewing music for the first movement and digging into the final movement of our 2008 show Perspectives Another highlight was the return of our colorguard after last month's hiatus for WGI.

Tickets remain available for the Youth Education in the Arts Wine Tasting 2008 to be held May 18th at Taos Wok & Restaurant in East Rutherford, N.J., but those wanting to attend are encouraged to RSVP by May 4th so the perfect blends of wine are available to all.

Dan Potter recounts part two of “One rookie’s story,” a segment aired during the inaugural year of Field Pass in 2005. In the piece, Potter interviews first-year Phantom Regiment member Leah Stanfield who explains what it took for her to get back on the field as a member of the color guard after working her way up from an alternate position in the summer of 2005.
