Meet Grace Welter and follow 2010 Carolina Crown through GraceNOTES, a new blog featuring the thoughts and experiences of a corps member.

Grace Welter has been actively involved in music since 1999 when she began her percussive career as a 5th grader in Eagan, Minnesota. She first became interested in further pursuing music and especially drum coprs in 2005 when Ben Harloff directed her marching band at Eastview High School in Apple Valley, Minnesota. Grace is now a junior studing Music Education at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and plans to graduate in 2011. There she has been actively involved in the drumline for three years as a member in the cymbal line and front ensemble. While she's home in Minnesota, Grace teaches the Champlin Park High School and Eastview High School drumlines. The 2010 season will be Grace's second year as a front ensemble member with Carolina Crown as well as her age-out.

2010 Boston Crusaders February Camp Report

The Crusaders recently completed their February camp at Lakewood Ranch High School.

Overall attendance was down a bit this month as many members had excused absences due to school-related performances. It is corps policy that a required school music performance takes precedence over camp. "Although we would love to have every member here for every camp, we know that's not a reality," Executive Director Tom Spataro states. "We want to work with high school and college band directors in educating our students, not against them...so we maintain that flexibility when we can."

SCV Winter Guard & Cadets' Winter Percussion Perform Locally On Friday, March 5

The Santa Clara Vanguard World Champion Winter Color Guard and Vanguard Cadets Winter Percussion ensemble will perform in exhibition on Friday evening, March 5 at Peterson Middle School in Sunnyvale, CA.

The show is sponsored by Wilcox High School of Santa Clara, CA. This will be the sixteenth annual Wilcox Winter Show and the two Vanguard units are very excited to perform in front of a truly home crowd for the first time in many years!

In The News: Drum Corps Recruit To Show His Brass

Jarred Sozzi expects to stay busy this summer with his mellophone.

Sozzi, 17, a Land O' Lakes High School junior and band member, will tour the country as part of Drum Corps International, which brings top-notch high school and college musicians together to perform marching routines at football stadiums across North America.

June will find Sozzi in New Jersey and New York. July's stops will include Ohio, Illinois and Texas, among others. The group will end its tour in Indianapolis in mid-August for the Drum Corps International World Championships.

Star Shining Bright For Return At '10 World Championships

Last weekend, former Star of Indiana members returned to action at the corps’ headquarters in Bloomington, Ind.

Star of Indiana was a Drum Corps International member corps from 1985 to 1993. Winning the DCI World Championship title in 1991, the organization left the competitive drum corps circuit after the 1993 summer season, pursuing several additional performance ventures including the Emmy and Tony Award-winning stage production “Blast!”
