With the buglers trilling and the drums snapping, it may have felt like the thunder travelled from the ground up Sunday evening at University of the Pacific's football stadium.

Rockford’s Phantom Regiment drum and bugle corps came home before it left this year.
Because of a shortened Drum Corps International touring season, the annual Show of Shows at Boylan Catholic High School was the Regiment’s first competition of the season, giving local fans the opportunity to hear the debut performance of the 2008 program, “Spartacus.”

Called “Samurai,” the arrangement required all the musicians to yell “ah-ya” as loud as possible as the drums and horns built to a furious peak.
“Accent the ‘Ya' at the end of the yell even more,” Bertman, brass captain head for the Cavaliers, said to the group during rehearsal. “The audience is already getting excited with the drums pounding, and this will pump them up even more.”

Bonnie Ott Thompson says she’s still “dumbstruck” when people remember her.
After all, it’s been 32 years since she became a women’s pioneer in the fast-paced world of drum-and-bugle corps competition that once was dominated by males.
“To this day, I’m so impressed. I can’t find the words. I’m dumbstruck that people still have heard of me,” said Ott Thompson, who, as a 10-year-old member of the Stockton Commodores, became the first female to play a brass instrument in a drum-and-bugle corps in 1967.
