Members' Journal - Second Week of Camp Print
Written by Michelle
Sunday, 11 June 2006
Another week of move in has come to a close. By now everything is fairly routine, and it’s a matter of pushing to the very end to survive the Alabama heat. Monday began with a difficult breathing block around the stadium field. We ran a mile with sprinting a good chuck of it. I had trouble breathing because my inhaler for exercise-induced asthma started running low. After running we were marching and playing on the field. We had to strive for perfection, especially in the ballad where I could have sworn we played the same chord at a hold 15 times until every attacked and released together. I was losing focus because of the high temperature. I think we took a step backwards in terms of improving because the hornline had trouble concentrating. We also had some people dehydrated from not drinking enough water. From that day on we have had water at often intervals to prevent the same thing from occurring. During ensemble that night my legs were burning after “Waltz of the Mushroom Hunters.”

Member's Journal - First Week Moved-In Print

It has been a little over a week since I moved-in with Spirit. This morning is a much needed break after a lot of rehearsal time out in the sun. Last Friday I flew into Atlanta with difficulty because the airline bag checkers didn't seem to understand why I had so many bags. It was hard to explain why I was going away for the summer and needed every bag there. Luckily I was not charged extra money for checking in one more bag than I really could. When I arrived at JSU I put everything in the dorm I was going to be sleeping in and headed off to rehearsal.

Member's Journal - Early May Camp Print
Written by Michelle
Wednesday, 10 May 2006

Camp this weekend caused some rude awakenings for me, but at least the airline didn’t lose my baggage!

The week heading into camp was quite stressful. I’ve been taking all of my IB and AP exams, and they don’t end until May 19th. I took my IB Environmental Systems test in the morning and headed to the airport around 3 in the afternoon on Friday. I found out my original flight may be delayed an hour and arrive in Atlanta at 8:30 pm. I did not want to be late to camp, so I chose an earlier flight scheduled to depart at 4:55. When I arrived at the airport I was happy to see my corps horn and duffle bag already on the baggage claim. Perhaps I am not jinxed. I headed to the Atlanta Bread Company in the airport to meet up with the other people flying into camp.

Member's Journal - April Fool's Camp Print

This past weekend (March 31-April 2) Spirit had our second drill camp. It was my craziest drum corps camp yet. I flew out of Florida in the afternoon on Friday and arrived in Atlanta for a connecting flight to Birmingham. When I arrived in Birmingham around 5 pm I patiently stood next to the baggage claim awaiting my luggage. About 45 minutes passed and my bags were nowhere to been seen. I had brought my sleeping bag and rehearsal bag as my carry-ons. I went into the baggage service center to report my lost baggage. These items included my corps horn, my running shoes, and all my clothes for the weekend. The airline said the items would be in later that night. I had to call the travel coordinator to explain my dilemma. I could stand back and laugh at the situation, but at the same time I was annoyed I didn’t have many necessities for rehearsal that night.

Introducing "Member's Journal" Print
Written by John Donovan, DCP Publisher
Sunday, 09 April 2006

I'm happy to introduce another in our series of regular columns - this time, an in-depth look at the life and challenges of a marching member of a DCI Division 1 corps. Our very own DCP Staffmember, Michelle, is a member of Spirit of JSU and will be providing updates throughout the weeks and months - a journal of her experiences and perspective of what it takes to do this drum corps 'thing'. Perhaps we can show those who aspire to march in a corps what it takes, what some of the rewards are, and the affect on one person's life going-forward. Un-scripted and un-edited .... these are real-life drum corps stories. It should be interesting to follow. -jmd

Here's Michelle's introduction .......
