Member's Journal - March/April Drill Camp Print

This past weekend I had a much better camp than earlier in March. My carpool and I arrived in Jacksonville just after 11 at night because we couldn’t leave Tallahassee before 5:30. Apparently we missed a horn warm up that didn’t get past a certain articulation exercise because either the horn line wasn’t focused enough or people weren’t prepared. I think it was because of the former, judging from past camp Friday nights. Before lights out, I went over to a euphonium player’s apartment to review something for Sigma Alpha Iota (music fraternity for women that I’m pledging for this semester). I’m excited that I may get to be a fellow sister alongside some of the other horn line girls this summer. Aside from that, I bought a new pillow in between last camp and this one; falling asleep at night was no problem. I love that pillow…

This past weekend was pretty awful for me. How’s that for an opening sentence? Allow me to explain… Two days before camp, I woke up with a runny nose and sore throat. I felt dizzy, exhausted, and generally did not want to move. I went to bed that night not sure if I was going to go to camp the next day. I slept for 16 hours in between Thursday afternoon and Friday morning after taking Tylenol PM to knock myself out. On Friday morning I called my mom to tell her I was going to camp because I woke up feeling a little better. The friends I was carpooling to camp with stopped at Wal-Mart where I picked up some Dayquil before departing Tallahassee.

Member's Journal - February [Drill!] Camp Print

Camp this weekend went by very quickly. On Friday night, I arrived a half hour before sectionals ended because my friend and I couldn’t leave Tallahassee until 5:30 due to a class. She has a thermometer in her car we watched drop from the low 50’s in Florida to the high 20’s as we pulled into Jacksonville, AL around 11 at night. I didn’t expect such a chill because I was wearing gaucho pants and flip flops – bad idea! The only thing I did do on Friday was receive a drill number. Just like last year, I got the second mellophone drill spot, except I’m not longer M13. At night I had the worst time sleeping. Being back in Mason Hall, the girls were in the band room where not all the lights go off. I couldn’t get comfortable.

Another weekend; another audition. I had no access to a mellophone over the holidays, so I had no idea what to expect. I brought my French horn for a second time. I carpooled with the same people as last camp, minus one who is probably not marching this summer. We actually left earlier and stayed in Atlanta for awhile before heading over to Jacksonville. It gave us time to rest, and the drive was a little under two hours from Atlanta.

Member's Journal - December Audition Camp Print

Time has flown by this semester. It's another drum corps season, and I was very anxious to return. Over the past couple months I've been insanely busy being a music major and participating in college marching band. I had to miss the first Spirit audition camp due to the big rivalry game between FSU and UF. Returning to Jacksonville, AL was something I'd been looking forward to for months.

Since I go to school in Tallahassee, FL, I don't have to fly to camps this year. Not only does this save money, but it makes the monthly treks to Alabama more exciting. I left on Friday with a friend/baritone vet I go to school with after my last class of the day. She had two people her former high school that drove all the way from Tampa the night before to continue a carpool with us. The trip took six hours after driving in a circle around Dothan, AL because we missed a turn. I took over navigating after that.
