Drum Corps (truly) International
What started years ago as local community-sponsored (often by the local American Legion and VFW posts - and local parishes) corps has grown into an activity whose accomplishments, achievements, and fan base reaches all over the globe. While the fans may range from many different nationalities, the members themselves (for mostly financial and geographical reasons) are predominantly from North America – although currently DCI does boast members from 15 countries. As current affiliates join each other to prepare for another exciting season of music’s major league, I wondered, as a current expatriate, what are the opportunities for musicians around the world to be a part of a similar organization? With technology, the world is shrinking every day, and participation in activities like music especially helps bring people together. Recently, I was watching the local news and there was a story about drumming in the desert.

Old Ghosts
After aging out of the Santa Clara Vanguard in 1998, I soon married and moved far from home. While visiting my home town recently I was astounded when I realized that I had not been to the Vanguard Hall in five years. Amazing how time passes. I decided to pay a visit to the old Hall that was the center of my life through my adolescence. I jumped in the car and drove the same roads I remember driving when I was first trying out for Vanguard and was scared to death that I would not make it. For fear of being too dramatic, turning the infamous corner and seeing the Vanguard Hall with the shiny fleet in the parking lot was a feeling of a soulful homecoming.

Drum Corps International: Building a Strategic Partnership for Success
Most people associated with drum corps are finely tuned into 'on the field' decisions being made for the upcoming 2008 season (such as amplification) or the number of seats on the Drum Corps International Board of Directors. However, others are focused on 'off the field' issues such as everything that happens logistically between the drum corps and the show event sponsors. From the strategic planning of tour schedules, securing of housing and stadium facilities to reservations of transportation resources to managing a pool of volunteers and coordination of resources and money. There's more than meets the eye (behind the scenes) when a drum corps hits the field.

From Murder to Music
They are the kids better left unseen. They have performed acts of violence that would raise the ire of any person with a conscience. They have lived a life void of hope, kindness, true friendship, or direction. I began doing therapy with these former gang members as an intern at a local facility. They came from all over the state with one idea in mind, “I have to change, or I’m going to die.”
Remembering the rough and tumble roots of drum corps, I floated the idea of getting a drum line together as an activity for the boys. At first I was not sure they would like the idea. A few days later one of the boys approached me asking when “drum group” would start. A few days after that, a boy from another facility transferred to ours because he wanted to play drums. Here came the hard part. With no budget, where do we get musical instruments? I soon found myself at the junk yard pulling parts off cars and at the hardware store buying garbage cans that sounded good.

Tour Event Partners: Working to make tour great
Thousands of people have experienced the drum corps activity at one time or another. Some of them are still around and continue to support the activity as directors, instructors, tour managers, board members, sponsors, volunteers or drivers. These people play a key role in helping drum corps make it down the road safely and securely. But, they aren't the only ones who make a tour successful. All the planning by tour managers and directors is useless without the integral help and tremendous support of the people who organize and host drum corps events - the Tour Event Partners (TEP).
According to www.dci.org, the TEP consists of people associated with band booster organizations, community festival organizers, service organizations and foundations that use the Drum Corps International (DCI) events as fund-raising, entertainment and educational vehicles. DCI works with over 130 organizations that annually host events on the Summer Music Games tour. |
