Citations top Open Class field at new Amherst, OH, DCI competition

July 25, 2009 – Amherst, OH . . . Yet again this season, the weather threatened to wreak havoc on the 2009 drum corps season.  This time, it was the first-ever “Amherst Drum Corps Showcase,” a DCI Open Class competition which had already moved locations from Buffalo, NY, to neighboring Jamestown, then again to Amherst.

Fortunately, while rehearsals during the day were cut short due to rain, the skies cleared in time for the show to run without any problems.  The Citations did not have any problems, either, as they convincingly took top honors tonight, including all General Effect and Visual captions.

Blue Devils B stay undefeated in cross country Open Class opener

July 25, 2009 -- Omaha, NE . . . The calendar said there were just two weeks left in the Drum Corps International season, but last Saturday’s “Drums Across Nebraska” contest felt like the Open Class opener to most of the eight competing corps and their directors. That’s because it was the first time this season the corps from different regions came together to compete in an all-Open Class contest.

Yet if there were any “opening night jitters” before a half full Millard South High Buell Stadium, they didn’t show in the undefeated Blue Devils B (65B-36P-19CG-2DM=122) as they powered their way to a victory of more than two points over their arch rivals, the Santa Clara Vanguard Cadets. While BDB’s win confirmed their role as Open Class championship favorites, the Blue Devils’ A corps also stayed undefeated at the World Class regional in Atlanta -- making the prospects of the Concord, CA, organization’s first title sweep a growing possibility.

Red River Thunder a big success once again

July 19, 2009 -- Denton, TX . . . The 4th Annnual “Red River Thunder” was a perfect blend of cooler weather brought about by a hailstorm earlier in the day, a great venue and, of course, a fantastic line-up of drum corps. Presenting their show “The Great Divide,” the host Cavaliers outperformed the competition to place first.

After a strong opener, the corps put on a seamless drill, complete with intricate color guard work, collapsing drill formations and crowd-pleasing antics. It seemed the corps had a high energy level despite the big championship show last night in San Antonio. The Cavaliers still have plenty of room for improvement and are looking to catch up to the Blue Devils before season’s end.

Blue Devils wow Kansas audience at the annual “Starlite Drum-O-Rama”

July 13, 2009 – Hutchinson, KS . . . in the shadow of the old rehearsal stomping ground of the Sky Ryders, Ross Viner and his crew staged another outstanding production at Gowan’s Stadium on the campus of Hutchinson Community College. This show has grown tremendously in the three years since it was re-established after an 18-year gap. And the Blue Devils made their first appearance here to overwhelming audience response as they led an eight-corps roster of DCI competitors.

Bucs maintain perfect record at “Grand Prix"

July 11, 2009 – Wayne, NJ . . . A packed house of drum corps fans witnessed the Reading Buccaneers keep their unbeaten streak going with a convincing victory at the 45th “Grand Prix” sponsored by the Hawthorne Caballeros. The threat of rain was in the air all night and fortunately it held off until the event was over.

The new facility at Passaic County Technical Institute was a positive change from Clifton, with more parking and the seating being closer to the field. The voice of DCA, Fran Haring, served as the emcee for the evening, bedecked in his famous Hawaiian tropical shirt. It was great to see his wife Barb, still recovering from her stroke but was in great spirits and enjoyed herself at tonight's event.

The New York Skyliners Alumni Chorus sang the National Anthem under the leadership of Tom "Bucky" Swan to start the festivities.

Brigs capture “Drums Along the Owaso"

July 11, 2009, Auburn, NY . . . I don’t want take credit for the weather, but the sunshine did start to come when I got into New York State. Up until 3:00 PM it was not certain if this show was going to go due to a large amount of rain and storms.

I must credit the organizers from the Rochester Crusaders for getting everything ready. They were even pushing the water off the track with wide brooms at 5:30 PM. Unfortunately, the crowd was very small as a majority of people must have thought the show was not going to go ahead.

Blue Devils shine at big show in Denver

July 11, 2009 – Denver, CO . . . The common gesture of crowd members as they found their seats for the 2009 “Drums Along the Rockies” was to immediately look up at the sky. Half of it was that beautiful blue you only see at altitude in the Rockies, while the other half was filled with dark thunderheads that looked ready to open up. Many were glad they had brought a raincoat, but equally worried that they might need to use it. The winning unit turned out to be the Blue Devils with their musical book full of familiar tunes.

A few raindrops started to fall as the event opened, but they were put out of mind as High Country Brass of Denver took the field for exhibition. This is Colorado’s first all-age drum and bugle corps. As an all-ager myself, I was delighted to see this 25-member corps play with obvious experience retained from their former marching days, as well as a touch of panache that had the crowd clapping by the last of their three numbers.
