Bucs continue winning ways at Lewisburg’s “Cavalcade of Champions”
July 19, 2008 -- Lewisburg, PA . . . It was an outstanding night of entertainment -- four current and former DCA World Champions in competition, coupled with exhibition units that spanned the drum corps idiom.
With powerful shows that excited the capacity crowd on so many levels, it was a widely mixed audience that included former drum corps members to first-time viewers that were here to witness the Reading Buccaneers extend their undefeated streak and score the latest highest mark for this DCA season and watch the Hawthorne Caballeros and Empire Statesmen slug it out for second and third, respectively, with the Harrison, NJ, Bushwackers rounding out the competition portion of the evening.
It does not happen often, but the Reading Buccaneers took the field first in competition due to a position draw that took place at an earlier DCA meeting (since all four of the competing corps were within the top four positions at last season’s DCA Championship). |

Blue Devils risk absurdity and win In Dallas
July 17, 2008 -- Dallas, TX . . . Blue Devils continued their winning ways by besting crowd favorite Phantom Regiment at Lake Highlands High School in this Texas competition, one of DCI’s longest-running. The corps really shined in the visual category tonight. The show is drum book heavy and showcases what the line is capable of. Despite a second-place finish in percussion, the battery displayed great chops, laying down difficult passages and tight execution during the battery/pit musical tradeoffs.
The corps is performing as if it is already August. Color guard work is near flawless, with well-executed rifle tosses, body moves and flag work. The costumes and flags are a color palette of pink/orange outfits and yellow flags with black and white designs. The horn line is complete with screaming trumpet players, rich tonality across the voices and stellar musicality.
The writing between battery and pit is superb. The pit drumset player is a nice addition to the traditional instrumentation. Drum features throughout the show offered difficult maneuvers and near-flawless playing. The Blue Devils know how to deliver and really have a shot at lucky number 13 this year! |

Devils stay undefeated in Lincoln, fans enjoy encore concerts by all four corps
July 14, 2008 -- Lincoln, NE . . . Some of the best surprises are those that come from disappointment. That was the case at the “Cornhusker Summer Music Games” at the University of Nebraska’s storied Memorial Stadium tonight.
While the show was billed to have five corps in competition, the Open Class Revolution opted to pull out to continue a mid-season camp near San Antonio and prepare for the rest of the Drum Corps International tour coming to the state later in the week.
So, faced with the prospects of only a four-corps contest, Lincoln show organizers persuaded the competing units to each play short post-contest standstill encores that more than made up for the absence of the missing corps -- giving fans full dollar value for their tickets. |

Citations lead field at Manchester DCI contest
July 13 -- Manchester, NH . . . The sun is a big yellow globe burning in the sky to welcome drum corps fans to Memorial High School Field for the second annual “Fiesta de Musica” hosted by the Muchachos Senior Drum and Bugle Corps. it is already a favorite here in the beautiful Granite State.
The music from “Sweeney Todd” takes center stage at the beginning of the Citations’ 2008 show, “The Razor’s Edge{. And what an exiting beginning it is. As soon as this corps enters the field, the crowd can feel the excitement. This corps is charging on to the scene with new uniforms, many new instruments and many new members.
Drum Major Michael Rawding muses, “This is a year of firsts in many areas -- my first year as drum major, the new uniforms and members. It is my goal to help make this a top corps.” |

Carolina Crown tops The Cadets for first time in their history!
July 12, 2008 -- Orlando, FL . . . On a pleasant evening, in a stadium that has held the world championships four times, a historic event occurred again as Carolina Crown beat The Cadets for the first time, before a crowd of 6,200 paid admissions.
Crown’s show is full of tremendous music that the average listener is going to know. This combined with a horn line that has, in my opinion, the best overall sound of any corps this year, a guard that is at the top of their game and the excitement that seems to be missing in many corps shows, has led to a very crowd- and judge-pleasing show.
Crown won GE Music, Visual Performance, Guard, Brass and Music Ensemble. Jim Coates of Crown had this to say about the corps’ performance tonight. “It was a very exciting show. We added several changes, which they handled well. The audience was very interested in the show and I believe they showed we have the most entertaining show out there.” |

Bucs sail to victory at "Grand Prix"
July 12, 2008 – Clifton, NJ . . . The Reading Buccaneers swept all major captions this evening as they stayed on course for a fourth consecutive DCA title at the 44th annual “Grand Prix” sponsored by the Hawthorne Caballeros. Fran Haring, the “Voice of DCA”, served as the emcee for the evening and was accompanied by his lovely wife Barbara.
All of the drum corps members and fans were extremely happy to see Barbara back with us after she suffered a stroke one year ago this week. We all wish her continued success on her road to a full recovery.
The New York Skyliners Alumni Chorus performed our National Anthem under the leadership of Tom "Bucky" Swan. I will report first on the competition first, due to the size of the show, as there is much to report on this event. |

Bucs sets new High Score Record at Sound of the South Show
July 5, 2008 -- Manassas, VA . . . It was an incredible evening of firsts, extending win streaks, meeting up with old friends and seeing two very special DCA loved ones that were totally unexpected and an extraordinary delight.
The Reading Buccaneers were on fire this evening with their lush “Pursuit of Joy” drum corps celebration show as they bested their closest competitor, the Connecticut Hurricanes, who also wowed this enthusiastic crowd with an updated retrospective show that harkens back to the corps’ 1999 program.
This was Shenandoah Sounds’ third hosted competition since their inception and it was a resounding success for the corps, the fans and the competing drum corps. |
