Cadets win their own "Music in Motion" home show
July 5, 2008 -- Clifton, NJ . . . Scattered rain storms did not deter The Cadets from hosting their 2008 New Jersey competition in the familiar site of Clifton Stadium the wonderful Fourth of July Birthday Weekend. The move from Giants Stadium created a smaller audience than in the past, however this may have been partially caused by the high price of gasoline here in the East. And the wonderful old home of the Giants and Jets is in the process of being replaced by a new stadium. So in the scheme of things the crowd fit quite nicely into this smaller stadium and perhaps it was for the best.
With the faint outline of a rainbow in the distance over the nearby park, the scene presented the perfect picture for an evening of drum corps. Still, the event was not without its problems. The sound of corps warming up wafted over the pretty lake, annoying some of the patrons sitting in the stadium trying to hear the early corps in the show.
The food was handled by a local high school band parents group and long before the second corps went on they had already run out of whatever they were selling. As usual, the parking on the street presented problems, which you would not normally see at a venue like Giants Stadium. |

 ‘Buglers Holiday’ dodges raindrops
July 3,2008 -- NASHUA, NH . . . Under threatening skies, the defending DCI Division II (open class) champion Spartans hosted their annual “Buglers Holiday” contest at Stellos Stadium. The evening got off to a late start thanks to heavy rains and lightning that hovered over the greater Nashua area for more than an hour, pushing the contest start time to 8:30 PM on the east coast. The Boston Crusaders were the talk of this show as the only World Class corps in the line-up. Taking their time arriving on the field, the corps oozes a calm but brooding confidence that smacks the audience with its bold and powerful brass line. “King Fisher” continues to wow audiences as it has in years past. |

Cavies’ Samurais ambush Cadets’ ‘Pursuit of Happiness’ for DCI Madison win
June 28, 2008 -- Madison, WI . . . Camp Randall Stadium. Say that name to drum corps fans and they’ll wax nostalgic about the performances they’ve seen in that legendary University of Wisconsin venue, which has hosted no less than seven Drum Corps International World Championships, the last in 2006. It is widely viewed as one of the best stadiums for drum corps in the country.
Through the years, Camp Randall has been good to The Cavaliers, who won their first DCI title there in 1992 and their last there two years ago. All totaled, they won three of their seven titles in Madison. And that sacred drum corps ground proved to have great karma for the “Green Machine” again as the Cavies’ samurais ambushed the Cadets’ “Pursuit of Happiness” to take top honors at DCI Madison to cap the first week of the 2008 season.
“Well we have a nice history here at Camp Randall. The fans are great,” said Kevin Gates, the 22-year-old drum major of The Cavaliers who hails from The Woodlands, TX. “We just came out tonight and had a really good ensemble show. We had some rub here and there and some rough edges, but even though we had a short rehearsal day today, we came out and did what we do and it was pretty comfortable tonight.” |

Cavaliers wow crowd with ‘Samurai’ production at Southwind DCI competition
July 1, 2008 -- Richmond, KY . . . Nothing can begin to describe the complexity of the 2008 Cavalier show of “Samurai.” What the staff is asking of these kids is phenomenal . . . and they are answering the challenge. The guard tells the story of the samurai with so much emotion, you feel each and every member is a warrior.
The horn line even gets into the action with their dance and body involvement. At one point they even jump over another member of the horn line in a karate kick-type motion.
The music is so haunting, at times it gives you a chill. Then, when they want, they hit you with that big sound. The percussion is extraordinary this year, not just in their playing, but with the movement while they play. |

Bucs remain perfect at ‘Barnum Festival’
June 28, 2008 – Bridgeport, CT . . . The long wait is over as Kennedy Stadium was nearly filled for six of DCA's top 10 corps from last year as they gave fans a full night of entertainment. This marked the 60th anniversary of the “Barnum Festival” and Art Harris and his committee are to be commended for a job well done. Fellow Drum Corps World staff writer Timothy "Ace" Holleran served as emcee and performed his best despite a public address system that failed many times during the night.
The Reading Buccaneers served notice that they are ready and primed for a run at a fourth consecutive DCA title, while running their winning streak to 41 competitions without a loss. "The Pursuit of Joy' is this year’s show theme as the Bucs display various body poses by the brass line in the opening set as the brass sound builds in volume in a large arc form. |

Energetic lineup brings triumphant close to ‘Blue Water Brass’
June 23, 2008 -- Port Huron, MI . . . Rarely, when the curtain comes down on a 30-year serenade, do the final notes sound as sweet as they did in the opening. But six corps gave the audience something to remember along the banks of the St. Clair River and helped “Blue Water Brass” go out with a resounding fanfare.
The cool evening brought a mix of celebration and remembrance as the city put on its 30th -- and last -- DCI contest. The Cavaliers grabbed the prize in World Class competition, but it was the manner in which the show honored decades of volunteers that earned the night’s longest ovation. |

Stillwater show true “beauty” as Regiment holds off bold and brassy Crown
June 22, 2008 – Stillwater, MN – There were two statements made during “Drum Beauty” at Stillwater Area High School Stadium on the second night of the Drum Corps International season. First, the organizers and sponsors of this annual show -- now in its 45th year – know how to do a drum corps show well. And second, Carolina Crown knows how to “Finis” a show, even following the eventual winner and Midwestern favorite, Phantom Regiment.
On a near perfect night for drum corps, some 4,000 people packed the home grandstand, with a couple of hundred more sitting in the general admission seats on the far side. They were treated to a show that featured good parking, easy access to corps souvenir stands, great food choices and a crowd-pleasing, 10-corps contest that ran precisely on time.
DCI Executive Director Dan Acheson was there to help present awards and no doubt take notes on a show that’s a model for other summer tour event sponsors to follow. |
