My name is Wayne Downey and I'm the brass arranger for the Blue Devils D&B Corps and Owner of XtremeBrass.com. I'd like to welcome you to Brass Advantage -"The Land of all things Brass". This column is intended to be a forum where you the reader can inquire about any topic related to playing a brass instrument, as well as an opportunity for me to share with you some of my thoughts on brass performance, technique, instruments, and accessories - along with some of the secrets that have helped me guide the Blue Devils to an unprecedented 20 Jim Ott awards for "Excellence in Brass Performance."
I'll be answering questions from our readers in future issues of Brass Advantage. Please feel free to send any questions or topics you'd like me to discuss to:

Meeting new drum corps enthusiasts from around the globe has been a very enjoyable aspect of this position. As the rapid growth of all-age organizations continues, I get to interact with many new friends, most bringing experience and talent that adds to the promotion of Drum Corps Associates.
One challenge is to keep abreast with everything going on across a broadening geography, and to become comfortable sharing ideas with each other. Unfortunately, it’s no longer possible to easily bring everyone together in person, on a regular basis. The next meeting of DCA administration and corps staff will be held in Scranton, Pennsylvania on April 22. That’s thirteen weeks since our last gathering! DCA relies heavily upon electronic communication to hold everything together.
This marketing and public relations effort will depend upon volunteer contributions of information. It was recently my pleasure to be introduced (electronically, of course) to Mr. Cozy Baker. Cozy, a long-time columnist for Drum Corps World, has been amusing me for years with his voluminous and unusual insights into all things drum corps. |

As anyone who has been through the experience can attest, staging a drum corps event in one’s local community is not always an easy sell. While our own hearts and energies are directed toward promoting the marching arts, one of our greatest challenges is to convince our neighbors this really is a big deal, and worthy of their attention.
Many support components, including everything from local volunteers, willing facility managers, corporate sponsors, local media, and help from political leaders must come together for any event to prosper. The community’s previous experience with our product is also key.
Planning to host the DCA World Championships requires all the same. This year, DCA’s championship host, the Empire Statesmen, is benefiting from decades of good will generated by their founder, the late Vince Bruni, and those who have continued his works to deliver a positive drum corps experience to the Greater Rochester, NY Area . |

Granted, when Henry "Lefty" Mayer and representatives from Drum Corps Associates seven charter member organizations sat down in 1964 to establish DCA, performing membership was primarily limited to males over the age of 18. But that's changed!
Surely, back in the time of Beatles invasion, and just six years after the founding of AARP, this country's most recognized organization for seniors, nearly every performer with the Skyliners, Buccaneers, and others were well past the age of majority. There were exceptions, probably many exceptions, but they were likely hidden from view. At the time, DCA corps were home-based in American Legion and VFW Posts, where doorbells did not work for those underage.
But time marches on! This is not your father's DCA! |
