We are happy to announce that we're opening our photo archive to public viewing. DCP's photographers have been busy capturing images from several events this past summer, which we're going to share with you. Included in the initial release are some great images from the 2007 DCA Preliminaries, Finals, and the Alumni Spectacular in Rochester, NY this past Labor Day Weekend ... as well as the DCI Division II/III Finals competition in Pasadena and other shows we had coverage at in Southern California. These photos are not available ANY where else - as they were shot for use exclusively by DCP. We will continue to add to this Photo Archive as time permits and images from our official photographers are available. The DCP Photo Archive can be found at photos.drumcorpsplanet.com.
We will also be posting updates shortly to the Drum Corps World Photo Gallery - which features images from all corps that have participated during the year - from the lenses of the DCW photographers around the world. Stay tuned for updates.
Both of these galleries are meant to memorialize some of the great performances that took place over the year. Enjoy! |

Drum Corps: Through Triumph and Regret
In doing research and interviews for my book, Not for the Fain of Heart: My Journey to Manhood in the Santa Clara Vanguard, I made a surprising discovery about the lives of drum corps alumni and the drum corps experience. My research focused mostly on my years in the Santa Clara Vanguard drumline but encompassed interviews with individuals in other sections and from other Corps and eras. What was most striking about these interviews was the passion each member had for their experience, good and bad. My marching career, like many, was filled with prominent ups and downs. I was lucky enough to end my marching career on a high note and leave with a tremendous feeling of accomplishment and awe. |

Welcome back to the land of “All Things Brass.” This installment of Brass Advantage continues to discuss brass pedagogy (the study of performance techniques specific to brass instruments.) If you haven’t read the last two Brass Advantage columns, I would highly encourage you to do so to gain an understanding of the concepts that have already been discussed. Simply click on the links that follow to catch-up on what we've covered already: Brass Advantage #11 & #12
The Aperture - I like to create the image (for my students) of the aperture gliding along what I call a laser beam of air (the air column) in a forward or backward motion towards or away from the throat of the mouthpiece. The motion of the aperture is controlled by the muscles of the face and is accompanied by the corners of the mouth moving in a similar manner (much like puckering your lips). The motion of the facial muscles should be very elastic and smooth and the condition of the tissue vibrating should be very supple.

The Winter Season of a Drum Corps Lifer
Drum corps kids have called Don Warren “the Old Man” since he was a teenager.
Sixty years later, the nickname fits like plume to shako. Warren, founder of The Cavaliers and their president since the Truman administration, is as classic as a single-valve G bugle.
But don’t let that fool you into thinking the times have passed him by.
Warren is as devoted to drum corps – and as frank in his opinions – as he was when he stalked the sideline as Cavaliers director from 1948-73. His pulse rate still rises and falls with the outcome of each contest.

"Here's a scoop for you, Cozy," DCAssociates President Gil Silva told me at DCA Rochester. "The Kingston Grenadiers are coming back out next year!"
As if DCA Rochester wasn't a big enough success, to have our Canadian brethren join DCA once again, is more of a rush than barreling over Niagara Falls. Silva's news capped off one of the finest DCA Championships of all time since the first year, 1965. The weather was flawless, Allen Buell's committee hosted corps and fan$ with the hospitality of a Dixie picnic, the precision of a Borg society replicating Utopia and the entertaining grace of Tony Bennett. |
