Strolling into the local coffee shop by Lake Corpsdom, I noticed the familiar gaggle of pool sharks in the back beyond the poker tables. Too early for a slaw burger, I order my black goo. As I take it straight, no chaser, sans sucar o leche, I don't have to worry about how they would straighten out the spoon when Bubba swashes the dirty dishes. Unlike the Starbuck's Shoppes prevalent when I lived on Bainbridge Island in my sleepless in Seattle days (kava available on every corner and in the middle of the block...as one enters the ferry or steps off), this shop has a sign in the window: "We hang artists here." Yep, this is no cyber shop, no laptops to be seen. Nada wireless, one gets wired on coffee. Table chat revolves around how 20 acres of canola can provide enough biodiesel to fuel all the farm equipment. Sipping, I pondered the artists I've seen, interviewed...stared at their foot soles from the bus aisle lately while in prone pad purgatory. |

4 July 2007 Wednesday, 5:15pm Chicago, IL I can't believe it has been almost another week. Last Friday I found another location to add to my 'favorite shows' list: Normal, IL. The kids there treated us like it was a regional, or finals week. I'd never preformed there before. On Saturday, we drove all the way to Minnesota. We pulled in during the daylight, and fit in about 3 hours of rehearsal before the show. Despite being so far north, I've never felt that dehydrated during tour yet. I felt shaky during horn arc, and had a bad headache during ensemble. I was not in a good mood heading into the show. |

24 June 2007 Sunday, Noon Russelville, AL Laundry Day I haven't had time or motivation to write recently, as we've had three show days in a row. On Thursday, we were in Benson, NC, for CrownBEAT. Although I did not have a good show, especially as the brass quintet had timing issues in the ballad; somehow we got off from the rest of the hornline. The quintet faces front while the rest of the hornline faces back, so perhaps there was some phasing between drum majors. The score sporadically jumped up seven points. I'm paying less attention to the scores this year- they seem erratic. I stupidly forgot my inhaler and was unable to play the whole closer. We played the finale with Crown afterwards. |

When Steve "Hairbear" Masters retired from drum corps after the '99 season with the Racine Kilties, he traded in his ol' mini-van for a Corvette (not a CorpsVet). Master's logic: "If I have a 'Vette, I'm truly done with all the long corps commutes."
Last week, Masters planned to rent a mini-van to haul percussion equipment to Wally, the Mad Plaid's famous cymbalist...Next day, he called saying, "I'm at a car lot looking to buy a mini-van. I need one anyway with all the bar band playing I'm doing and hauling equipment...."
Hairbear drove to Racine in his newly-acquired mini-van, full of congas and other bangin' gear. If he'd just play a soprano, even a scooter would do just fine, certainly a Harley.

13 June 2007 Wednesday, 10pm Abingdon, VA We're finally on tour! Monday was the last full day of all days- it made up for my horrible Sunday performance. I marched and played to the very end of the show with ease. I spent all evening up until lights out packing for our departure Tuesday night. I was expecting another long day of rehearsal, but we stopped 10 minutes to noon to clean the stadium. We had an hour long corps meeting after lunch, discussing rules about tour, cell phones, etiquette, etc. Since I'd already packed, I loaded my horn and shako on the equipment truck and took the afternoon to relax. I read the rest of the book I bought on Sunday. After dinner, I went to get ice cream with some other mellos and trumpets. I found a packet called "Backseat Driver" at TCBY Treats and picked it up. Right before I was going to put my luggage by the bus, we were told to go back and clean the dorm. I found a color guard stressing out about packing all her stuff, and went through her room, figuring out ways to reduce the space she would take up on the bus. I also gave her some bungee cords, so she could hang things up. Finally, we were ready to get out of Jacksonville.
