Josh Pitts enjoys explaining drum corps to those who don’t know what it is.

“For those who understand, there’s no explanation necessary. For those who don’t, there’s no explanation possible,” he says.

Pitts, of Decatur, Ga., is in his third year as conductor of Rockford’s Phantom Regiment Drum and Bugle Corps, one of the top performing drum corps in the world.

In The News: Drum Corps International To Play At Waldo Stadium In July Print

The best drum corps on the planet is coming back to Kalamazoo.

When Drum Corps International Kalamazoo marches into Waldo Stadium, 2,000 of the world's elite young marching musicians will come together to compete and entertain.

The July 5 event is one of more than 115 live competitions that will occur when the annual Drum Corps International tours the nation this summer. From June to August, the tour features ensembles composed of up to 150 brass, percussion and color-guard students ages 14 to 22.

Not many of us find the thing we're going to devote our lives to at 18.

Yet, for Don Warren, that's exactly what happened.

One afternoon in 1946 he was minding his own business, sitting in the stands at Soldier Field during a Boy Scout jamboree, when the Racine Scouts marched in. The troop was dressed like any other unit, in khaki and olive drab, but they blew tunes on bugles and beat cadences on drums. Warren was dumbstruck.
