In drum corps circles, Memorial Day weekend camp is often referred to as “death camp”, but looking back on our weekend, I’m not sure that “death camp” is how I would describe it. As with every Memorial Day weekend that I can remember, our muscles got a little sore and our chops got a little ragged, but “birth camp”, or “life camp” seem to be better metaphors for our holiday weekend. Four out of the five movements in “Renaissance” were brought to life, and our first uniformed appearance of the season in the West Racine Memorial Day parade was quite possibly our strongest ever showing in that parade.

We here at Drum Corps Associates are thrilled to announce the expansion of our Class A Final competition this year! For the first time ever, there will be FOUR finalists competing for the Class A crown, up from three in previous years. Our Executive Board made the decision to add another corps to finals in Class A, in response to the explosive growth in that category over the last several years. The pre-contest ceremonies will be shortened a bit to accommodate the extra time needed, and we expect the first finalist to hit the field at 5:30 PM sharp on Sunday, August 31, 2008.

Yamaha Corporation of America, Band and Orchestral division, is pleased to announce its new partnership with the Atlanta CorpsVets Drum & Bugle Corps. The CorpsVets recently purchased an entire outfit of battery percussion in Silky Silver including MTS-Snare Drums, 8200 Series Multi-toms and Bass drums along with stadium hardware and carriers. With this purchase, the CorpsVets join the fast-growing ranks of drum corps nationwide, which use Yamaha percussion exclusively.
Founded in 1997, the CorpsVets are one of only two drum and bugle corps in the entire state of Georgia. Competing in regional and national DCA (Drum Corps Associates) shows before large audiences and a panel of judges, the CorpsVets also participate in local community parades, standstill concerts, exhibitions at DCI (Drum Corps International) competitions and host educational clinics for local high school students.

Richard Price said he's not above calling a parent at dinner time — or at work — if their kids get out of line during band practice at Portsmouth Middle School.
An accomplished musician himself, Mr. Price said he's had a reputation of being "very tough" ever since he began his teaching career over 20 years ago at Bishop Hendricken. Neither the parents nor students are complaining, however — far from it.
"They see that I'm fair," said Mr. Price, a Riverside resident who's been at the middle school since 2000. "There are kids who are quiet and they want to get things done. Then all of the sudden you have a kid over her who's goofing, and I'll go after that kid who's goofing. And then you see other kids going, 'I want to be here to play music, not to hear the teacher screaming and hollering.' "
