Each time Josh Katz steps out with his drum and bugle corps, the Caballeros, it’s like slipping into history.

Mr. Katz said he was born into the corps, following in his older brother’s and two sisters’ footsteps 20 years ago when he picked up a soprano bugle. But the Caballeros, based in Hawthorne, N.J., has been around much longer than that, tracing its roots back to the end of World War II.
