Cadets Reacting To Food Price Increases

The following story appeared in Marketwatch.com today and sends a signal to the Cadets and all corps. This summer, already hit with huge fuel increase for corps, now has the additional burden of food prices expected to be 20 percent higher than in 2007.

For the Cadets, this has meant a series of meetings and a review of menus from day to day, according to Justin Heimbecker, Assistant Director of the Cadets.

In The News: Student Musician On Top

Hundreds of young musicians come from all over the world to compete in an intense marching band boot camp, spending 12-hour days completing music rehearsals and physical training.

It sounds like a pitch for the latest reality television show, but this is a reality North Stafford High School senior Andrew Piner has faced since November while competing for a spot with the Carolina Crown Drum and Bugle Corps.

One weekend a month, beginning in November 2007, Piner traveled to South Carolina to spend his days waking up at 6 a.m., beginning a four-hour music rehearsal, followed by five hours of push-ups, sit-ups and running and then participating in another block of music rehearsal.

In The News: Jasper's Kier To Play Drums With Memphis Sound

Jasper High School junior Andrew Kier has been selected to tour with the Drum Corps International group Memphis Sound this summer. Kier is a drum major with the JHS band.

"I've never seen Andy so excited about anything as he is this," Jasper High School Band Director Jeff Parma said.

Kier said he sent an audition tape with not much expectation of being picked.

Barry Named To Madison Scouts Board

Former Dane County Executive Jonathan Barry has been named to the Board of Trustees of The Explorer Fund for the Madison Scouts Drum & Bugle Corps ( www.MadisonScouts.org ).

A former Dane County and state legislator, Barry served several terms on the Board of Regents of the University of Wisconsin System and as a corporate and non-profit executive of numerous prominent organizations. He has operated a family beef and produce farm in the Mount Horeb area since 1970 and serves as the part-time development director for Operation Fresh Start in Madison.
