I believe he "May" have actually started his drum corps career with the Old Our Lady of Lourdes Cadets. When they and the olde Dumont Police Cadets closed their doors in 1963-64 a BIG slug of their memberships jumped to Fairlawn, resulting in a HUGE (For that era) drum corps.

Now there's something I never heard ... I was pretty sure that #2 was with Fairlawn in 62, playing either cymbals or FH ... in all my conversations with him, he never mentioned OLOL or Dumont ... and I never heard Butch mention Hawthorne either ... he was with the Marksmen in 67 and 68 and then was DM of Syracuse in 69 ... according to Genero, Butch had a brief fling with the Hurcs in the winter of 70 but, opted for NY instead along with a bunch of others from the Upstate Crew ...

Guess I'll have to ask Timmy Boardman someday ... he and Butch migrated from corps-to-corps together beginning with their I-men days ...

Awwwww, geeze... I thought you were going to tell us a story about your DM.

Does any one have his background / history or a story / memory about him before I update the "Feature Post"??

I can tell you some about Mark Plotts, God Bless him. There's a lot of stuff about him on the Westshore History thread. Some stuff, I'd rather tell at a party after we have had an adult beverale and I'm relaxed...

He was the DM at Shikellamy HS in the late 70's, quite a good HS DM in quite a fine HS competitive band in period. Westshore had DM issues, he was brought in by new visual staff who were working with Shik.

Mark was quite literally thrown to the DCA wolves. That's putting it politely. It was a tough row to hoe for him, right out of HS and into a pretty rowdy and nutty Senior Corps. I was happy he was a rookie as well- took some heat off ME..... Had a very pretty GF, Janet from the Guard. later on, became a very, very good and professional indoor adjudicator for Cavalcade IIRC before a rather sad and very untimely death. he was a decent guy- just tossed into a tough situation. Alan Smythe was brought in to help mentor him as well.

Yeah, helluva mix in the corps during that time and plenty of internal issues here and there. Part of it IMO was the difference in mentality because we had ex-Yankee Rebels in the drum line and those cats knew what it took to win. For years the drum line was the weak spot in the corps and now the horn line was catching crap for holding the corps back... which was not well received by some. Add in a new horn guy with a DC instead of MB background and first change there since the re-start... hoooo boy.

Can't remember the session with Alan (Allen?) too much but did not go well. Think Mark was told to direct and Smythe kept stopping him and saying what Mark was doing wrong. This was in front of the corps which didn't do Marks confidence any good. Smythe was trying to help but was handled in a lousy way. IIRC (and not much I remember) Smythe was trying to get Mark to show more of a personality in his directing which (IMO) was the least of our worries. Lot of corps members talked to Mark later saying not to sweat it as he was doing things OK which probably did help in the long run. And at least one ex-Reb snare chewed out corps staff for allowing this to happen. "OUR DM you should have STOOD UP for him".

Which reminds me.... week before DCA at Corning, NY. Same place the buses went the wrong way down the main drag in Corning... TWICE! One of the gripes about Marks style was due to our fast paced concert number "Grenada Smoothie". Mark would direct every beat which kind of made his arms a blur in bad lighting and loose sleeved uni. At Corning the woman working CG was told to direct because she could direct Smoothie by waving her arms on 1 and 3 only. Yeah, week before DCA and we're trying this crap.... The lady replaces Mark on the podium , brings the horns up, directs the song and.... jumps off the podium. Notice I never said "brings the horns down". Half the horn line popped down at the usual spot and the rest of us are still at horns up. Mark jumped on the podium with this look/smile like "I've been vindicated" and says "Horns" and brings us down. All I could think on the field was "You deserved this bit of payback buddy, good for you".

Oh yeah... either 1979 or 1980 DCA (think 1979) you hear someone yelling on the last note of our show which was held..... forever.... while back I figured out who it was... Mark... :worthy:

i was getting a very long time before it would post . it just hung there for 1-2 minutes. thumbdown.gif

I thought it was my computer.... Wouldn't let me post/reply to any thread. Every time I attempted to it sent me to the front/home page for the DCP forums...(was not having any problems with the other forums I'm a member or owner or moderator on...

I re-booted my computer and even attempted again using another browser. Nothing worked so I just left it alone last night and gave it another go today before we left for the parade in Phoenixville, PA.... Got back home around 5:30 tonight and it's still OK...

#3 I don't think anyone who wasn't a Sunriser in the late '70s would get. This gentleman was the first marching roto-tom player (that I'm aware of) and we lovingly called him "Hammer-hands"

I know! I know! heh

His playing can be heard on Dennis Delucia's incredible late '70s drum solos. Don't think anyone but Tony White or me will know the name.

He's wearing my shirt... w00t.gif (Fran also knows!)

#4 I'm drawing a complete blank on the name so I'll quit until someone exposes that. After #4 it gets easier for #5, then not as easy.

I'm with several others playing along.... I know at least 6 of these fine gentleman... thumbup.gif (Marched with 4 of them and competed against 2 others that I know their names)

I just realized I've posted more today in this thread than in the past few months combined. tongue.gif

I have days like that.... post several times in a row and disappear for a few days... LOL (though I do read and check several times a day)
