Now there's something I never heard ... I was pretty sure that #2 was with Fairlawn in 62, playing either cymbals or FH ... in all my conversations with him, he never mentioned OLOL or Dumont ... and I never heard Butch mention Hawthorne either ... he was with the Marksmen in 67 and 68 and then was DM of Syracuse in 69 ... according to Genero, Butch had a brief fling with the Hurcs in the winter of 70 but, opted for NY instead along with a bunch of others from the Upstate Crew ...

:-)

The story I was told was Jimmy was supposed to go to Sky and Butch was supposed to go to Cabs. Costello wanted Jimmy and Lefty wanted Butch. (Butch told me that around 82/83...)

We were talking about "It's a small world after all".... (How did we end up were we were) After my time with BAC I was supposed to go to Sky (As a Bari) and went to the Renegades (Everett MA, RCA Corps) met Donna and never went to Sky. When I marched in the Hurcs it was still "all male" and Donna wanted to march, Mike DeLorenzo (Director of Sun in the winter of 74) invited several of us from Poughkeepsie to come down to Sun and, as they say. the rest is history...

I can only go by what I know or, the conversations I had ... after the 69 season, Pat and Dennis McCue, who played in Sky's 69 bari line toyed with the idea of marching with the Hurcs for the 70 season due to the number of Marksmen that joined and the fact that the the travel from Enfield CT to NY was waring on them ... Butch had just finished 69 being the DM of Syracuse and was looking for a new home after they decided to not field a corps in 70 ... Pat suggested that he talk to Genero and try the Hurcs ... mainly due to the fact that Butch knew all the Marksmen that had come to the Hurcs after the 68 season ... (you still followin' this?) ... Genero basically told him to march soprano for one year and then they'd explore the DM slot ... Butch opted out and headed for NY ... Lefty basically presented him the same proposal and Butch accepted - with one condition - if Syracuse fielded a corp in 71, Butch had given his word he would return and be their DM ... Lefty accepted and Butch played lead sop for Sky in 1970 ... he then went back to Syracuse as DM in 71 ... returned to Sky as Asst DM in 72 ... and became lead DM in 73 ... where Hawthorne fits into all of this I just don't know ... I'm not sure if Costello would have brought in Butch knowing he could lose him in 71 ... I think Costello always wanted Russo due to the influx of Lucy's talent that walked in the door in 1970 ... those that didn't go to the Cabs went to BS to help them make their last "grand stand" in the Jr circles ... (whew ... I'm getting exhausted) ... where was I ... oh yeah ... Butch and Jimmy ... I think they had a lot of fun with a lot of people exploring the "what if" of their DM destinies ... kind of like Eric Perrilloux and Les Parks exploring the "what if" of Eric teaching the Cabs and Les handling Sky (both marched together in Sky in 1953) ... this was an actual libation filled discussion at one of the GAS Reunions in the mid-90's ... it was hillarious ... I guess the "could have beens" were plentiful ... Tony wanted to join Sky? ... where the heck did that come from ... Boston Tom? ... did he recruit you?... he used to meet up at my house in CT along with the McCue boys to continue their journey to NY ... Tony ... you could have part of that crew as well!

Wow.. That was a lot to get through. shutup.gif (All I know (well, remember) was what Butch told me, hey it was 30 / 31 years ago!)

It could have been.... (me being a part of that crew if it was for the 1970 season on) As for my "supposed" to go to NY... there were some, when hearing I was leaving BAC for Sr Corps, said I was to go to the Skyliners and play Bari. Hey Jimmy Centorino recruited me for BAC and when he left he went to the Matadors...

My "detour" was because of my neighbor, when I lived in Lynn MA, it was Dick Doucette (Lt Norman Princemen Sop / WDCHOFer) who "invited" me to go to a Renegades rehearsal. (Where he was the front DM) Bobby Gaff's brother (Ed) was the Director and his sister (Louise) was the Guard Capt. With Dick Doucette fronting and the Gaff family at the helm it looked and sounded like a LOT of fun to this 16 year old at the time. And as I said, I met Donna, a kid from the Majestic Knight (63-68) and the 69 merger Corps of the St Kevin's Majestic Knights. Her mom wanted her to stay a little closer to home...(Revere / Charlestown) (talk about attempting to keep up! To say nothing of NONE of this has anything to do with our current featured GW! (We'll both get a few Kewpies for this! LOL)

Don't recall Butch ever being present at the Hurcs...tough that doesn't necessarily rule out him maybe having a conversation with Joe. 1970 is when Joe brought Jimmy McHenry down the pike from New Bedford...he had been grooming him to take over the lead DM spot from him while teaching the Whalers.

McHenry was a great fit for the Hurcs ... I can only go by what Joe and Pat told me about Butch ... he definitely had a desire to be lead DM somewhere ... certainly made his mark at the helm of Sky for 20 years ... died much too young in 93 ...

Butch's only year as major of Brigs was 1971... Don Carroccio was DM until the failed 1970 corps that folded after they scored 35 at the first show... Butch came with many of the Albany crew and Dom Del Ra to help us get back on the field and back into the finals of DCA... both of which were quite successful in 1971... Then the bottom fell out and 23 of us left that corps in the fall of 1971 and joined back up with Corky Fabrizio and the 1972 Rochester Crusaders - still one of the most dynamic corps in the history of DCA...

When that happened, things fell apart fast and Butch led many of the Albany crew and a few from the Syracuse area to Sky...

So the demise of Brigadiers created two of the finest corps in the history of DCA '72 Sky and '72 Cru... who were joined by Cabs, Bucs and Hurcs to create what - undoubtedly - was the finest top 5 in DCA history... any one of the 5 could easily have won...

Marching under Butch and calling him my friend were both amazing parts of my corps career... I wish it had been for more than one season...

Agreed!

died much too young in 93 ...

I wish we (Donna and I) came back around the activity earlier (than 2005) so I could have re-connected with Butch... worthy.gif
