Jim Nevermann Posted December 31, 2007 Author Posted December 31, 2007 Bobby Thompson made them a very effective part of our drumline, Is Bobby still with us? If so, he must be quite elderly now. I talked with him briefly at a DCA Rules Congress in Fall 1976 or '77. Quote
BennyBassDrum Posted January 1, 2008 Posted January 1, 2008 Is Bobby still with us? If so, he must be quite elderly now. I talked with him briefly at a DCA Rules Congress in Fall 1976 or '77. He passed away back in the early 80s. He was my instructor when I was with the Meadowlarks, and St Andrews Bridgemen. Danny Raymond Sr passed away about 3 yrs ago down here in florida. I was fortunate enough to be taught by both of them, as well as Jimmy Hurley (not sure what happened to Jim), Vic Kulinski-who became a brother to me(Heat Wave), and (Uncle Dennie)Dennis DeLucia during the past few years with Bridgemen Alumni. Some of the best that ever were or will be. Yes, I was truely blessed. Quote
Gary Matczak Posted January 3, 2008 Posted January 3, 2008 I have two sets of 15" 17" 20" Ludwig trios on fixed carrier brackets, they do not disassemble without wrenches, cases are HUGE.............we bought them from CD of A, all girls corps....................they had to be some tough girls to carry those things,............ CANDRUMMER Posted May 3, 2013 Posted May 3, 2013 We had double tenors 14-16 triples 14-16-18 and timps in the Guelph Royalaires in 74. Often wondered how the BACKS of the guys are these days who lugged these mothers around. Hey and don't forget there were NO CARRIERS back then just two criscrossed drum slings!!!. The timps if I recall had a leg rest. Slingerland came out with a "carrier" that weighed almost as much as the drums.STEEL tubing with a HARD plastic "pad" for the shoulders. Always found that S-LAND drums weighed more than LUDWIG for some reason. Quote

Jaminbenb Posted May 6, 2013 Posted May 6, 2013 Interesting finding this old thread... When I first joined the Hershey Chocolatiers (in the fall of 1977) I carried a set of (Slingerland) 16, 18, 20's (using two snare straps) That set was a set of (18, 20) doubles, "morphed" into triples with the 16 in drum. I thought that when the guy that played one of the two sets of Ludwig 14, 16, 18's left the corps, (and I thought he'd never leave) that the 14, 16, 18's were actually a LOT lighter, and had no problems with them (and playing those in high school the next year or two) When I first joined Westshoremen, they had Slingerland 14, 16, 18's which were a TAD lighter than the Ludwigs...the next year they got the 12, 14, 16 cutaways which were pretty heavy (and I hated their carrier) then we got the 10, 12, 14 Pearls in 1983 which were REALLY light! When I went to Reading and played tenors in 1985, they had Premier 10, 13, 14's which even with the odd size, were pretty light, and more balanced. Quote
CANDRUMMER Posted May 7, 2013 Posted May 7, 2013 (edited) for the most part yes,.............but the Ludwig Challenger Snare drums weighed a lot more than Slingerland TDRs,.............. Then some guy decided "hey lets make em play two drums at the same time"! Hence the CHROMO-WOOD models which were wood shells wrapped in STEEL!! LUDWIG and S-LAND both has these. The "warmth" of wood combined wth the "crispness" of metal so one of the ads said.. And the WEIGHT of an anvil!!!! Edited May 7, 2013 by CANDRUMMER Quote
