5thbassman
https://www.facebook.com/ILoveSmartMusic/app_397681130260114 This exercise is written for, and played by 6 basses. Cadets used 6 last year because of the half and half thing... did it just work so well it's catching on? Thoughts?
Michael Boo
Six bass drums is nothing new. We had six in The Cavaliers in 1976 under Dan Spalding, who is the guy who went to Spirit of Atlanta in 1977 and gave their drum line a ton of instruments that were kind of out there for the time, like septuplet tenor drums, a vibraphone that flipped over to be a marimba, (carried...yikes), six or seven bass drums (I don't remember which) and many other things. Unfortunately, one of our bass drummers contacted mono at the start of the season and couldn't march.
skajerk
In '83, we marched: 11 snares 6 basses 5 tenors 5 cymbals (And only 4 in the pit. The 1st year VF grounded their pit and one of the last corps to do so. I think this was the 1st year 27th grounded theirs) Edited May 3, 2012 by skajerk
mingusmonk
Pull it off? What's the big deal about 6 basses?
Michael Boo
Pull it off? What's the big deal about 6 basses? I'm guessing it's a bigger deal when one is the "5thbassman."
CaDevil
It would seem to be a bit of a blow to the identity of the guy who had been carrying the house. I guess now he is just part of a duplex with the 6th bass guy.

SFZFAN
It's obvious to me that the Cavaliers are just copying the Cadets. Who would have ever thought to put 6 basses on the field otherwise? And I like waffles...
ibexpercussion
It is always a fun effect when you put more drums on the field than most people are used to seeing/hearing. Madison '96 (8 tenors) Crossmen '95 (10 bass drums in feature at the end) Madison '98 (All snares and tenors started on snare, if I remember correctly) Just to name a few.

Put as many as you want out on the bfield. But if you suggest putting 4 bases out there on a MLB field, they'll be M30 rocket mortar fire into your kitchen and living room, so you've been forwarned to not even think about that.
