Santa Clara Vanguard 2008 "Eclipse" - incredibly under-rated and under-scored line, IMO; awesome battery work in the exotic Indian piece in the show.

YES!!!!!

I remember seeing a few of the tenors on that line perform this drum break with Murray Gusseck and Colin McNutt at a PASIC clinic in 2008. That ending lick was so great they did an encore of the entire thing. One of the best jam sessions I have heard in my time listening to music. Seriously.

Here's my top 10...in no particular order....

1) 83 Bridgemen - Black Market Juggler

2) 87 Santa Clara - Lezghinka

3) 92 Cavaliers - Whole show

4) 94 Madison - Snares playing cymbals in front and back

5) 97 Madison - Pirate fight on top of rotating Drum rack

6) 87 Garfield - whole show

7) 04 Santa Clara - crazy awesome parts near the end of the show

8) 90-92 Crossmen - Awesome parts all around, but especilly in drum solos

9) 03-05 Phantom - Whole shows

10) 90 Blue Devils Drum solo in Tommy with snares on Roto-Toms

1993 Star - every burning snare non-tap roll

1994 BD - Closer

1995 BD - Caribe, esp. tenor break.

1997 BD - Snare accelerando.

1998 SCV- Snare break. Slurred, yet still #### clean.

1999 BD - Split roll betw. snares at the end of the opener. Everyone was splitting things after this.

2000 Cavs- Tenor break

2004 SCV - Drumline break

2006 PR - Opener

tie-2008/2010 PR - All of it.

I was blessed to come into the activity in the 70. I’ve seen so many great lines and awesome moments, too many to stop at 10

In no particular order:

*Won Drums that year

*1993 Star – entire show, From the first note to the last…this line is goose-bump city!

*1975 SCV – feature after the opener – Smokin groovy monster line; performed to near perfection; simply one of the best lines of all time

1992 Crossmen – entire show This is one monster groove machine of a show and these guys just threw down

*1974 SCV – Young Persons Guide was a total game changer in DCI. They were Gods!

1990 Start of Indiana – One of my personal favorites; just awesome

*2008 Phantom Regiment – Entire show *holy Cow*

1984 SCV – entire show is a masterpiece

1975 Blue Stars – entire show, noone played a harder book that year and they performed the crap out of it

*1982 Bridgemen – Black Market Juggler …just nuts!

*(tie) 1991 SCV – feature before the final push…*throw babies*

1974 Muchachos – entire show, Wow…just Wow!

*1995 Cavaliers – Mars (opener) is ridiculous

1986 Garfield Cadets – Christopher Street (opener) is incredible

*2005 Cadets – Feature is rockin and so fun

Honorable Mention

1979 Spirit of Atlanta – Nutville is just awesome

1974 Anaheim Kingsmen – Exorcist feature is wonderful; not to mention the snare line full of legends

1991 Blue Devils – entire show, one of the meanest books of the 90s

*1982 Blue Devils – entire show, 1st year with Float at the helm; they were awesome

*1981 Bridgemen – the feature was scary clean and so fun to watch

1977 Capital Freelancers – The feature is remarkable

*(tie) 1991 Cavaliers – feature with the pit on extra base drums …on fire

1978 Bridgemen – 2nd of many great Bridgemen shows, Harlem Nocturne is smokin (Bayonne ’77 rocked as well)

2000 Blue Devils – the pit accelerando is cash money

2003 SCV – the feature before the closer is smoking

I have to add VK 1989 and their quads using bass drums. They beat BD and SCV at their home show in percussion one night!

Any list that leaves off 1984 SCV isn't a percussion list, it's just a drum list. And yea, there's a difference.

When we first heard it in the lot, we thought it was a warmup exercise, not an actual part of the show. Took a while to appreciate it...definitely one of Ralph's ballsiest works, considering every OTHER solo was a note-rammer.
