Skylinersop16 Posted March 31, 2013 Posted March 31, 2013 Okay, the saga continues with my mismatched, orphan drumline. The snares are finally set and now I find myself in another dilemma. My set of bass drums did not come to me with harnesses and with the budget being tight right now I have begun looking into other options. I found a lot of cotton web harnesses for sale and they are much cheaper than a standard bass harness. Here is a link to one in case my description didn't quite work. http://drumsonsale.com/product.php?id_product=2023 My question is, are these things worth buying? They would only be temporary (just like these drums) until we can switch them out with a real harness. Quote
Soprano Martin Posted March 31, 2013 Posted March 31, 2013 No experience with that harness but I've been with several groups that used the Ludwig harness below with happy results, including high school, college, teaching school band and the line I am working with currently. http://www.columbuspercussion.com/store/ldwig-standar.html Quote
Skylinersop16 Posted March 31, 2013 Author Posted March 31, 2013 That first link was just for reference and those Ludwig ones look more dependable plus black is better than white for our purposes. Thanks for the input, I think I am going to go ahead and order them! Quote
CANDRUMMER Posted April 1, 2013 Posted April 1, 2013 The cotton web sling was used for MANY years before the harness-carrier was invented. I would recomend the black LUDWIG "CADET" model as opposed to the standard model. The Cadet has a waist belt with two cross straps that have the snap eyes to attach to the ring hooks on the bass drum. 1 Quote
Gary Matczak Posted April 1, 2013 Posted April 1, 2013 Having used these types of slings for many years in my youth I will say they do work,........but they put the drum in an awkward playing position, and are not comfortable at all............right now there are two XL type carriers on ebay for the cost of 4 of these,...........I would highly recommend getting those two and searching for how ever many more you need,........... The owner of these carriers on ebay has a "buy it now", or "best offer" options,......here is the listing Carrier Link The quoted shipping seems pretty high, but with the best offer option, you have the opportunity to negotiate,........... I agree: go for the harnesses. The slings were before my time, but not by much. I knew people who had used them and greatly preferred the harnesses. Quote
jonnyboy Posted April 18, 2013 Posted April 18, 2013 The slings are bit difficult to get on an off, so young players tend to just drop to their knees and rest on the drum. One summer of this and the money you save on slings will be negated by damage to your drums. It's a trade off for sure, but if you have to go to slings just be wary or used some padded drum covers.
