Diners, Drum Corps, and Drives

Recommended Posts

It's Championship and our anniversary weekend, so we decided to get one more drum corps trip in for this year. We headed out at 5:00am down the turnpike to the Delaware beach coast.

Beat the shore traffic on the beautiful drive down the coastal hiway, through the soy and corn farms to Lewes DE.

We got our beach breakfast at a local Italian bakery on the way to Cape Henlopen State Park, a quiet park just North of Rehoboth.

Since we don't have prelims tix we are going to relax at our hotel, grab a quick bite, then go into Annapolis and see some sights and watch warm ups in the lot.

The view from our room:

Had lunch today in Annapolis at Davis Pup, featured on the other DDD (try the crab pretzel)

This single handedly may be the best example as to why DCA Championships are better in Annapolis. You can make a true vacation out of it. People want to travel there. Sure, visiting Niagra Falls is fun, but after the 4th or 5th time, it gets a bit old. Eventually Washington D.C. might get old to visit, but I feel like you have more longevity there. At the very least, DCA should change venues every two years. I am not saying the need to stray from their fan base too far, but a change of scenery helps bring in new people!

Thanks for the photos!

Agree. And maybe we should plant the seeds stating "DCA Championships should be held on the West Coast". Back in the 50's & 60's when many of these corps were closely affiliated w/ VFW &/or American Legion they went to the national competitions on the west coast (or east coast of the Pacific, if you prefer), they made the trip, and back then it was way harder and more expensive (adjusted for inflation) then now...

As always... great stuff, Truman!!!

I had an aunt and uncle who lived near the Delaware beaches, and they absolutely loved Cape Henlopen. Beautiful area of the country.

I agree with the earlier posters... the Annapolis/Washington/Baltimore/Eastern Shore region is a great place to plan a vacation around the drum corps events.

Downtown Baltimore has been a zoo the past few years with the Grand Prix auto race on Labor Day weekend... but the days before and after the weekend, the downtown/Inner Harbor area is "business as usual."

I certainly hope the championship can return to Annapolis someday. And I would say that even if I didn't live nearby. It's just a great venue and area.

Sorry for not updating sooner, will try to finish this up today!

We found a local fresh seafood shack on the way to the bay bridge, and had a fantastic picnic at a nice park a couple minutes away. Crab soup, cakes, deviled eggs, hush puppies and slaw were outstanding!

We headed for the historic district just 5 minutes from the stadium, and found great parking in a garage just one block from Main St. Only $2 for an hour or less! Shops, bars and restaurants line the way to the inlet and yacht club where visitors can tour the Naval Academy and museum and watch the yachts and boats as they come in and out of Ego Alley. Picked up a couple souvies, including some anniversary bling.
