Sure, it has to be run in a business-like fashion, but unlike a publicly-held corporation, its primary goal is not to be profitable. The primary goal is to assist in the success, financial and otherwise, of the individual units it oversees, and the activity as a whole. I am totally making this up, by the way, so I welcome the excoriating input on those more knowledgeable. Garfield? DCI has failed horribly in these areas. But it's more complex than that; you can accomplish that goal in either of the two presented scenarios. That's what this question is about; one camp believes DCI is fulfilling it's mission, another believes those same actions are a failure at worst and a stalling tactic at best. Ok; if that is what DCI is supposed to do; nothing more or nothing less than what is included their short mission statement which appears on a 990 form. DCI would certainly be obligated to give leadership council to all junior drum corps regardless of nationality and create some sort of organizational atmosphere for uniting those corps. But DCI would ‘not’, due to this statement, again ‘not’ be obligated to secure and pay for any competitive venues, secure and pay for any housing sites at those venues, secure and pay for any judges, pay any transportation fees for any staff working at DCI events, pay for any marketing, or pay out any competitive monetary prizes to any DCI competing corps. However, If you come back and state that DCI should pay for those things, then you must therefore adjust your (nothing more nothing less) contention concerning that short one paragraph statement which appears on the 990. (But, considering the info on DCI's site is 7 years old, well, yeah, I think they should update it. But that's not the point I intended.) The statement is what is on the 990. It is not opinion, conjuncture or vision. It speaks for itself, and all tax forms are legally signed as true and complete under penalty of perjury. BRASSO Posted April 11, 2014 Share Posted April 11, 2014 (edited) To assume that corps decided out of the blue, "hey lets hijack DCI for our own personal benefit!!" seems misinformed and naive. Not to me it doesn't seem " naive, or misinformed ". Just look how it was received by the non G7, to see ihow they interpreted this as a potential ( your words ) " hijack ". The Non G7 called an immediate emergency meeting of all DCI Membership upon the release of the plot... took an emergency meeting vote, and voted to boot the architects of the plot off the DCI Board of Directors, and replace them with others. One read of the Troopers Corps Director's public letter of response at the time makes it crystal clear ( to me anyway ) that the gravity of this plot hit home to the Non G7 Corps in very stark terms . It would actually be more a case of being " naive and misinformed "", in my opinion, to view this series of events immediately that followed by the non G7 in any other fashion than that they all viewed this as a direct threat to their very existence.
