Unfortunately the vast majority of corps that fold disappear without letting the drum corps "public" know the specific reasons. Some may have

sent their press releases in to Drum Corps World or Drum Corps News, simply stating the desire to "take a year off", when the truth was that the corps was going away for good. So the reasons why these corps folded are known to those who were involved, but, even then, members may not have been told the true reasons behind their corps disappearing.

Of the corps you listed, Keith, the only one I have seen a reason for its demise was the Ventures. Towards the end of their fabulous existence it was just too difficult to recruit young ladies into the corps, and eventually the ladies from the Ventures were invited to join the Kiwanis Kavaliers.

As for Eclipse.....we all know how Quebec has seemingly dropped off the drum corps map since the year 2000, when it still had 14 junior corps.

(Quebec had 49 active junior corps in 1977, third most, behind New York's 97 and Massachusetts' 59.) Their final season of '86 was one of the strangest in DCI history. They started out scoring a 36.7, 25.9 points behind the 27th Lancers. At DCI semifinals they scored an 83.1, which was just 2.5 points behind the 13th place 27th Lancers. I surmise that they used up all their energy by the end of the year, and simply threw in the towel.

Many of the corps you mention were part of mergers.

We used to have some former Brassmen members on Drum Corps Planet. Maybe they can respond to the reason they disappeared. I know they took in members of the Milford Shoreliners for the '73 season, and that was the final for the Brassmen. (The Shoreliners came back under their name for the '75-'77 seasons.)

St. Paul Scouts became the St. Paul Drum & Bugle Corps, later changed back to the Scouts name, and lasted through the 1978 season. (Its feeder corps later became part of the St. Paul Blue Knights.)

Sancians became part of the Spectra/Pembroke Imperials/Golden Rays/21st Lancers experiment for '78 & '79, then went back to being the Sancians. They lasted through '87.

Bellefontaine merged with the Dayton Thunder Jets in '62, and changed the name to the Golden Lancers in '64.

Not sure which Windjammers you're thinking about, but the ones from Wisconsin merged with the Thunderbolts (under the Thunderbolt name) for their final season in '78. The NJ Windjammers merged with the PAL Cadets and marched under the PAL Windjammers name in '84.

Polish Falcons merged with OLPH Ridgemen to become the Crimson Buccaneers for the '77 & '78 seasons.

Buckeyes merged with Cleveland Caballaros (this is way this particular corps spelled it) in '76, and lasted (as the Buckeye-Caballaros) through the '84 season.

Millstadt disappeared after the '69 season.

Maple City lasted through '82, and changed its name to Michiana Sunrise in '83.

Chevaliers merged with the Waterloo Royals (becoming the Royal Chevaliers) for the '75 & '76 seasons, and then folded.

I just love reminiscing, sorry don't mind me! LOL

Hey even Derry Patriots, I forgot about them and Sharpsburg Cadets, 84th Bucktail regiment. Weren't Silver Sabres a western PA corps? Also Cambria Cadets had a good corps in early 70's too.

In NY...Tri-Town Cadets, Geneva Appleknockers, Lakeview Shoreliners (before Imperial Regiment), St. Johnsburg Blue Sabres, Castlemen, Alpine Girls, Magnificent Yankees, etc.

Your reminiscing is greatly appreciated, Keith. especially by those folks who were part of those less notable corps.

southwestern PA was definitely an active place in the 70s - always a show somewhere within a few hours, and some Saturdays there'd be more than one show going on at the same time.

Silver Sabers were from Beaver Falls, PA, WNW of Pittsburgh - great winter guard.
