Licensing Issues - Not Just Drum Corps (for 70s folks)

Recommended Posts

Couldn't remember something so wiki'ed it this morning and found something else interesting. In the late 70s/early 80s there was the "Muppet Show" which was kinda hokey but did have some good bits and guests among the yawners. Reading the wiki part about the series being on DVD and found out even something that Henson/Disney owns can get hit with licensing problems.

Dang.... Vincent Price was one of the better episodes..... and I liked Uncle Deadly.... :tounge2:

Several songs were cut from the Season 1 DVD release due to music licensing issues. There have also been some cuts in the intro sequence, and backstage scenes leading up to these songs. However, episodes that used Disney music remained unaltered (for example, episode 14 of Season 1 used "Never Smile at a Crocodile" from Peter Pan).

  • "Stormy Weather" (Joel Grey episode) sung by Wayne and Wanda
  • "Gone with the Wind" (Jim Nabors episode) sung by Jim Nabors
  • "The Danceros" (Jim Nabors episode) sung by The Danceros
  • "All Of Me" (Paul Williams episode) sung by Two Monsters
  • "Old Fashioned Way" (Charles Aznavour episode) sung by Charles Aznavour with Mildred Huxtetter
  • "You’ve Got A Friend" (Vincent Price episode) sung by Vincent Price, Uncle Deadly and a chorus of Muppet Monsters

LOL loved them guys too... What the wiki article didn't mention was Disney bought out the Muppets 2004 (wiki again). No wonder there wasn't a problem with rights to Peter Pan. And Disney had business dealings with Henson back in 1989. LOL we went to DisneyWorld (go figure) for our Honeymoon in 1990 and saw ton of signs there about DizzyWorld getting Muppet stuff.

Hmmm S&W and Sam the Eagle on todays Drum Corps.... :peek:

I believe about thirty years ago, one of the Tom Chopelas corps, either Malden Ambassadors or early Diplomats did "The Muppet Show" complete with Muppet masks. I remember it vaguely and I know I've seen photos on Facebook.

Even in modern times this is a huge problem. I was talking to a buddy who plays in the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, and he was telling me about the recent Simpsons celebration. There were a plethora of celebrities (Weird Al, Conan O'Brien, John Lovitz, most of the cast, etc) that really made the event memorable, especially for Simpsons fans who went CRAZY seeing Conan sing the "Monorail" song from one of the best 22 minutes of TV ever. The concerts sold-out super quick, and there was talk of making a DVD of the concert but the licensing would've been insanely cost prohibitive because of all the stars and rights holders.
