You are given 10 Million Dollars to start up a corps....

What city and state?

Name of corps (or do you try to ressurect a former corps)?

DCI or DCA?

Who will be your design staff?

As a former Crusader this may sound like heresy but I would start up the 27th Lancer's again. Why? because they were a distinctive Corp with a history and so I think it's a shame that they are now history, somewhat. It would also create a natural rivalry between two Corps from the same State bringing back some of that tension from the past. I would give the money to the alumni, probably the members of Mass Brass that I performed with, and let them handle the running of the Corp because I wouldn't be able to be involved for reasons that may be lost on our younger contributors but not on us older folk.

Heresy...

Go to the Church of Most Precious Blood on Hyde Park Avenue (2 blocks from River Road in Hyde Park) and make a good confession, followed by a sincere Act of Contrition and you may not spend an eternity in Revere.

Now I have to go gouge my eyes out having read this from the keyboard of a true blue Crusader.

Woodall!!! Find this guy and get him help...

Woodall was just a pup when I marched and he had a tough first year as he chose to announce to the '78 Crusader lead line that he intended to have all the solo's that year. I don't think he had even started shaving and yet here he was making this announcement to Guys most of whom were as tough as coffin nails and most of whom could play their ##### off. I don't remember anyone responding to him as I believe we were either too hung over or, in the case of some of us, still drunk from the night before. It's got to be one of his greatest regrets. We did eventually respond by busting his chops for the rest of the season. The problem for Mikey was that he hadn't learned how to swim in the deep end of the pool yet so he didn't truly understand the repercussions of making such a statement.

I was going out with a girl who use to commute to practices with Mikey that year and I remember her, in somewhat of a pleading tone, asking me to please get the guys to lay off as it was getting to be too much for the kid. I suppose I empathized with the then 15 year old rookie as I had joined the Corp as a 14 year old and remembered that it wasn't a walk in the park for me either. I think I was able to persuade the guys to tone it down a little. I think.

I do feel a bit bad in writing this because I know Mikey wants to maintain his Rep but I can't help myself as I know Mr. Fallon know's some of these guys I'm referring to so I would like to suggest to him that he take that group of adult delinquents into consideration, double it in size then add 2 and in the case of a few add another level of gansta' then take in to consideration our extreme sleep deprivation and the fact that we were nursing severe hangover's. Then juxtapose this ever so chirpy 15 year old.....

I'll make it up to Mikey and talk about the following year. The 2 of us were part of a 4 man lead line in '79. Sustaining the melody line for an entire show with only 4 guys was a bit of a challenge. The 4 of us had a running joke before our shows. Question: "When do we breathe?" Answer: "After the show." Of course we had other members of the Sop section helping us out but the fact that we only had 12 Soprano's that year minimized this. If you ever listen to a recording you will hear a lot of vibrato which had less to do with a lack of technique and more to do with straining to play without breathing. Most of that vibrato came out of the end of my horn.

Heresy you say? I learned to be a heretic in the Boston Crusader's. Besides, Mikey's already well aware of my heresy.

As someone who loved both corps in the day, though I never marched with either, so I can remain neutral but will never reveal which corps I liked better at the time since I knew too many people who marched with both corps, you can love both 27th and BAC. You can take the cop out answer and say "I loved North Star" but this won't work since the only thing the two agreed on was their dislike of North Star. Keep in mind, I'm not being diplomatic, I remember both groups in the day and know neither took any prisoners so I live in fear.

Now I'll be more than willing to hear his confession, but he'd have to travel a bit farther north, and I'll give an appropriate penance, but Ray, don't you think an eternity in Revere is somewhat severe? Though now that I think about it, Revere does have the beach and of course Kelly's, so maybe it wouldn't be that bad.

I've actually just taken an early retirement from Global petroleum after 23 years. Global just so happens to be located in the city of Revere so I was in a perpetual state of penance. Also for those who have been following the "Your first show" thread and this one as well I would like you to note that both my home town and the city in which I worked have been mentioned in the space of a few hours. While it's true I did bring up my home Town I at first didn't want it to be named. Ghost, it may be that I'm suffering from sleep deprivation but it seems to me that the small world I mentioned to you earlier is now smaller.

Anyways, I remember reading an article in the local Revere paper while at work about 6 months ago. It was about complaints lodged by resident's in regards to a trumpet player in an obvious state of inebriation strolling up and down Broadway blaring away. The resident's said that his repertoire mostly consisted of old military songs. The resident's weren't so much upset with the fact that he was playing his trumpet as they were upset with the fact that he was not playing his trumpet very well.

The next day I E-mailed a fellow Crusader alumni and legendary soprano soloist in regards to this article. He promptly E-mailed back with the comment "If he wasn't playing very well then he had to have been a Lancer." I then E-mailed a Lancer alumni and legendary soprano soloist to inform him that one of his fellow Lancer's had obviously gone off the deep end. I also let him know that I knew it couldn't have been him as I knew him to always play better while intoxicated. I should also let be known that these legends are both Legends alumni as well as Mass Brass alumni and are also friends.

Yeah, you know I was kidding, plus Mike doesn't need me or anyone else to carry his water.

That's a guy that has devoted his entire life to the love of that organization, pretty close to the prototype for the brand.

I haven't agreed with every single move he's ever made, but I've never wavered in my admiration for his dedication, intelligence, and determination.

Pretty close to the poster child for "True Blue Crusader"

He's done pretty well outside the arena too.
