Roof open in Indy yesterday

Recommended Posts

The roof was open yesterday at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis for the Titans-Colts game. Could there be an outdoor DCI Championship next year?

DCI actually tested the stadium in 2010 with the roof open versus closed. It was determined that the accustics are actually better with it closed, especially with the curtains they provide for the competitions. There is also a cost consideration for opening and closing. Plus, all units are competing in the same conditions. To top it off, never a threat of bad weather to get in the way.

Since the acoustics are very bad with the roof closed, if you are correct, then they must be downright awful with the roof open.

No. The requirements for the roof to be open are to demanding. There can't be a hint of rain in sight, since the $700 million boondoggle was build without drainage in the field. So the roof must be closed at any sign of bad weather, which means that different groups could end up performing in different acoustic environments. Corps directors as a whole are not fans of that possibility. Furthermore, while the sound isn't any worse with the roof open the improvement isn't all that great.

I know we were hit in the head with "THE ROOF OPENS! THE ROOF OPENS!" when the move to LOS was being pitched, but that was pure marketing. There was never any intention to have an open roof during championships.

NEVER

GOING

TO

HAPPEN.

no drainage system, and August is thunderstorm central in Indy. Plus to be honest, the windows will create more sound issues than the open roof.

The ONLY way and outdoor championship is to happen is if they move it somewhere. Rumor is a committee is exploring options

I agree...interesting concept. But I also agree with Jeff...(Mostly...how's that for waffling?) NEVER GOING TO HAPPEN. As soon as a freak, unfortold, midwestern storm pops up which necessitates a closure -- halfway through finals night -- you've instantly changed the performance parameters of an "even and fair" competition. For that matter and that matter only, it won't happen.

I also recall the consideration that there would be no way to stop the curtain from blowing around...even if you could get it tied down pretty well, it would still end up billowing every time the slightest breeze came through. Unfortunately, I think if you really want outdoor finals you will need to go to DCA. I would be very surprised to see DCI championships return to an outdoor venue, even after the contract is up.

Obviously a curtain would not be present at outdoor venues...

I suspect we'll see an occasional (every 4 or 5 years) foray to the East or West coast. But most years finals will still be in Indy.
