1976 Kilties - What Happened.

Recommended Posts

Someone recently posted on FB the 77 Kilties and it was stated that the corps didn't make finals the previous year. Believe it or not, I never realized that!

Loved their 75 show and just figured they were there in 76. So, for anyone "in the know", please enlighten us. What happened?

What happened? They placed 7th in 1975. In 1972 Des Plains Vanguard placed 7th, but did not place in 1973. In 1973 27th placed 7th, and did not make finals in 1974. De La Salle Oaklands were 7th in 1974 and after that season they merged to become Oakland Crusaders and while they placed, they were technically a different corps. Kilties were 7th in 1975 but did not make finals in 76. cavies broke the curse by placing 7th in 76 and 77, but fell in 78. 27th placed 7th in 1978 but did make finals in 79 and placed 5th. So the story goes Kilties fell because of the 7th place curse. The truth is that after 75, Kilties struggled a bit. They did return in 77 but were not at the top of their game. Only by luck did they place in 1978, People still argue that either Garfield or BAC should have had the 12th place spot but their prelim performances were not as strong as earlier shows and Kilties had a surprise surge.

This piece about the '76 Kilts, written by Jim Anello, appeared on the Soundmachine forum back in 2003:

"My brother and I have a GE tape from the Kilts' 1976 prelims show with Dr, Bernard Baggs. They're pretty good - from concert to the end of the show they're very comparable in quality to the '75 corps. Dr. Baggs is pretty cool on this tape. Ever the educator, he begs the Kilts to play in their style. Tommy finishes his solo in Don't You Worry 'Bout a Thing, the horn line hits the big impact point, and Dr. Baggs exclaims, "Aaah! Now the Kilties are being the Kilties!"

Now, the drum tape was another manner. The Rotund One, Cosmo Barbaro, was the GE Percussion judge. He was completely silent during the opener, Knightsbridge March, and then said, "What can I say? The tune sucks!""
