To set the scene . . . .

NASCAR conducts its traditional 'Main Event' as its first race.

There is NO doubt, the DCA Championship requires a 3-day weekend due to corps travel. Only two of these all summer. Labor Day Weekend has presented problems finding sites for championships due to football starting earlier and earlier, on every level of play. Additionally, school age marching members and fans are busier with other obligations starting mid-August, like classes, band, sports, etc.

What's to say the DCA Championships couldn't be held over July 4 Weekend?

Understand the corps aren't at their peak till later in the season, but that's an equal problem for all competitors. Besides, early shows, like the traditional Barnum Festival can be quite entertaining, and once drew large crowds. Why not have a corps be judged the year's ' Best DCA Corps' earlier? Also, Best Brass, Best Percussion, Best Color Guard, etc., etc., etc.

Over the following weekends, corps can strive to eventually top those caption winners. Fans can be motivated to later determine for themselves which corps is really best in every caption. There would be lots of new 'buzz.' in the air all year long. Maybe even Fireworks at the end to draw attendance!

More importantly, the obligation to be better prepared and stronger 'right out of the gate' is likely to improve for every show held during June.

Because the 4th of July isn't always a weekend, but more times than not a week day.

In this format... most years since 2005, the Bucs still would have won.

Other than Labor Day Weekend I could go for like week before.....

4th of July would mess up that Tour de Baltimore set of parades that some corps use to help pay the bus bill.

The shows at the beginning of the season do NOT look anything like the final week-end .

don't think Nascar drivers get better with practice as the year goes on. the skill set is the same, year-to-year. as their CAREERS go on, maybe. which is why the veterans are at the front, and the unknowns in the rear

Fair points, one and all!

It's an issue that has troubled me for a few years. Something I believe needs examination. Obviously, there's no perfect concept. I do believe there has been a bit of decline in success with the championship event.

So, one question should be raised is "Could we do all of this differently and achieve a better result here and there?"

lots of schools shut down over the 4th for a week or two to conserve energy costs. Plus.....you have what, a month long season? with the wacky weather anymore and indoor, you can't start earlier than you do now.

and what's the incentive after finals? isn't the goal of a "season" to build to the big championship event and then boom, done? No offense to your after finals idea, to me, after "finals", who cares if you beat the "champs"? it's at best a hollow victory

In this day and age, corps are just not "ready" to perform their full show at a "championship" level by July 4th ... take a look at this year's sched to see how many corps are not even appearing until after the 4th (for whatever reason) ... just won't work IMO

I would say looking at the seasons shows ,it gets going with the Grand Prix and for those's who don't want to go up to Rocha a good ending for the season would be the Preview of Champions hosted by the Bushwackers ,I relize you have to add Minn Brass ,Alliance and Corps Vets,Kilties plus Kids Grove Scouts in to the bigger picture .But if I still lived up north i'd sure be happy taking in just those's two show's .And plus the group in Class A
