Angelo Torres - RIP

Recommended Posts

Long time Drum Corps member, Angelo Torres, passed away late Saturday night ... he marched with the Skyliners, Hurricanes, Park City Pride, and most recently with Sky's Alumni ...

RIP Angelo ... keep telling those jokes to Pepe ...

Here's his obit:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

TORRES, ANGELO M. JR. Angelo M. Torres Jr., 68, of Seymour, entered into eternal rest on June 27, 2015, at Yale-New Haven Hospital, following a brief illness. He was the beloved husband of Linda Mirabella Torres. Mr. Torres was born in New York, NY on January 15, 1947, son of the late Angelo M. and Olga Torres Sr. He was employed as a truck driver until his retirement. A proud veteran, he honorably served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam Era. Angelo was a “cowboy at heart” having loved the West, horses and watching western movies. He was a member of the CT Hurricanes and NY Skyliners Drum and Bugle Corps. In addition to his wife, he is survived by sons, TSGT Matthew M. Torres, USAF, currently stationed in Las Vegas, NV, formerly of Ansonia and Michael A. Torres of CA, step-sons, Jason Bailey of Newtown, Eric Bailey of Watertown and Stephen Bailey of Ansonia and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Rafael Torres. Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday June 30, 2015, from 5-7 pm in the chapel of the SPINELLI-RICCIUTI/BEDNAR-OSIECKI FUNERAL HOME, 62 Beaver Street in Ansonia. At 7:00 pm, a funeral service and celebration of Angelo’s life will be held with Deacon Richard Renker officiating, followed by U.S. Navy military honors. Burial will be private. Broadway Joe was definitely one of the good guys and will be sorely missed by all. Very glad to see him back in a Sky uniform and performing with the corps before his very untimely passing. R.I.P. Angelo.

Too many have been passing lately. sigh.

Best regards and condolences to Angelo’s family and friends.

Andy and Ray and others, please keep me on track here, but I am quite sure this is my fellow 2nd Soprano of 1969 season. Not a bad place was it to be with that hornline, and other Sopranos including Jimmy Ednie, Grass, Guarino, Pee Wee, Gus Wilke, Butch, Gene Grant, Ballard, and many more.

Angelo was as hard working as anyone, and carried his part. Famous quote as least to me, “I may not be able to play, but I AM HERE m*****f*****”. That was probably a rough rehearsal at Randall’s Island when we would get ridiculed if needed (“you runts” maybe?) so we would meet the level of performance expected. SO no news that it was a tough crowd.

Other 2nd Sops include a big guy from Glen Falls that rode down from greater Albany with Butch, and one other tall angular white kid - LOL. Sorry not recalling names. Yeah we recognized race, and Sky was the melting pot (no pun – LOL) that influenced me so positively as a young man – lessons for life. And Angelo looked after me at the downstairs of Salderini post, or up at Greenwood Lake – what fun. I was always ready to run parts and fingerings (uhhhh, 1-rotor-slide) with Angelo. And so Angelo was a strong asset to the Skyliners.

Anyway, I regret missing Angelo in later years, but his positive, very energetic persona it seems carried thru for MANY years. Rest in peace. Feels like yesterday, but it was 46+ years ago – wow.

Well Mr. DeRisi, if you ever had doubt that you marched with Sky in 1970, you just proved that you did in your soliloquy above ... Butch didn't join until 70 with "the big guy" from Glens Falls - George Ross ... so ... indeed you were in good company all around in that soprano section ... others included Dover, DeFiglia, Manny (well sometimes), Boardman, Nicky, Tambone and a few others (I'm sure Ray will fill in) ... not sure if Pepe called you a runt, but definitely a "dunce" from time to time ... especially when you were selling pots and pans ... you were an easy mark with your "hippie" hair - just like Billy Kirk ... wild times for sure ... and Angelo was always in the middle of it telling his jokes (and always forgetting the punch line) ...

Keep the memories ... stop around sometime and say hi ... someone will remember ... maybe ...

Skyliner terms of endearment, yes called dunces too … I looked it up, “definition of” for Pepe as instructor.

Andy is the walking “thanks for the memories”. So, more of the 2nd sopranos who played early on with Angelo are identified. Dover was the tall kid I mentioned – nicknames usually used before real names (e.g. Shake and Bake) - and George Ross. Dominic Tambone (was he a hairdresser? fun with sketchy memory) was one of the 1st Sopranos along with a few others, then lots of Lead Soprano. That was the balance, like 8-4-4.

As for me in 1970, we’ll take that to another time or thread, the prosecution has added good evidence here ;) This is not about me, but Andy told me a few years ago that I was thrown out of the Skyliners for long hair – that is amazing! All good vibes for Angelo is what it is.
