O.C. Standings 2015

It was brought up on another thread that some of the open class corps don't perform full length shows - and should be scored accordingly - but perhaps weren't last year. Does anyone know anything about this?

Except I'm sure Racine intends on performing a full show. They finally got what we assume is the closer on the field for the Dubuque show. Up till that point they had an unfinished show on the field. There's got to be a timing penalty in there somewhere for being under time. They also began competing very early in the season. According to their webpage they had shows back to back with very little rehearsal time in between shows. It doesn't really make any sense. Makes you wonder what the staff and admins are thinking.

Also, according to the DCP score comparison they've yet to break their opening night score of a 38.5 from 2014.

Next show: La Crosse on July 9.

With Metamora moving indoors, there were just two shows with scores. Louisiana Stars opened about five points lower than last year, but also five days earlier. Good gains by Genesis, Impulse, and Thunder. Six corps have yet to open their seasons, but it will be more than a week before we see any of them.

The question wasn't necessarily about just Racine. Last year, quite a few Open Class corps, when performing at World Class prelims in August, had shows that fell short of the minimum time for World Class but weren't penalized for it. Had they been, Cascades (who did have a full-length show) would have moved on to Semifinals. But it's too soon to assess how that matter stand for this season.

FYI Genesis was at 58.850 in Ft Wayne. Four day break before Bentonville, can't wait to see what they come back with!

Yes, and that's fine when they're being ranked separately, as they are at almost all shows (even though they have been scored on the same point scale since last year). However, when they're all being ranked together, as happens at the World Class Prelims in August, then it seems only fair that World Class requirements should apply to all corps.

So, as previously discussed here, Cascades last year, with a show of more than 10 minutes' length, placed 26th with a score of 72.250.

In the same event, 7th Regiment, with a show of less than 10 minutes' length, placed 25th with a score of 72.350.

For being 29 seconds under time, 7th Regiment ought to have been penalized one point--which would have dropped them two places at Prelims. But they weren't, and they got to move on to World Class Semifinals, while Cascades' season ended.

(Genesis, who also moved on to Semis, had an even shorter show than 7th Regiment, meaning they ought to have been penalized even more, but their score was much higher, so the penalty wouldn't have kept them out of Semis.)

Cascades could reasonably argue, "If we could have presented a show that was 30 seconds shorter without penalty, we could have cleaned it much more and earned a higher score."

What we don't know is whether the World Class corps agreed to take this risk in advance--in which case Cascades have no grounds for complaint--or whether the corps and the judges simply forgot this point.

The latter isn't so farfetched. It certainly wouldn't be the first time that the authorities were confused. Boston Crusaders used baby powder in at least two 2013 shows preceding Prelims with no penalties before they were socked during the "Big, Loud and Live" cinema screening. And the rules for ties got so murky (as explained in this thread) that the Blue Devils and Carolina Crown tied for the Brazale visual caption award in 2012 despite the announcer that night having stated that night that there was a tie-breaking procedure (which would have given the award to Crown alone).
