drummer5485
Just saw the news on their Facebook page.
Crown Phan
While greatly disappointing it is hardy surprising. They underwent this kind of financial emergency last year and they nearly folded.
chadwick
Wow...very disappointing to see this. Two days before their first scheduled show, correct? Reading previous posts on their FB page makes it that much more disheartening. Feel very bad for the members that put so much time into this to not get a chance to tour. lcarlton
Just shared it in DCP Facebook. The members said they were trying to do a flash fundraiser of $30,000 in 24 hours to go to Finals. They did the same thing last year and ran a fundraiser to raise $30,000 only raising $6,000. I voiced my opinion on Facebook but I really feel bad for all of these kids who put their heart into the program only to have it fold 3 weeks before Finals. With so many regional corps on the West and Gulf Coats it makes more sense to stay local and nimble until you can afford to go to Finals instead of trying a tour the first few years out.
DrumManTx
That sucks. They were promising last year. Remember the financial emergency last year. I'm wondering if going to Championships so early on in their formation didn't have an effect on it. So many of these new corps like Colombians, Eruption, Golden Empire, Louisiana Stars, Southwind, ect. are doing small, few weeks, not as travel intensive tours. Wondering if something like that wouldn't have been better for them monetarily. Sucks.
chadwick
Agree with many of you above that the newer corps that are spending a few years (if not remaining that way permanently) with shorter, local tours are playing it very smart. I'm honestly surprised that DCI approved their tour schedule this year if they ran into significant financial problems last year. Not blaming DCI for the issue, just wonder if they could have stepped in to recommend a different tour schedule this year so they can build financial stability. The southeast DCI tour is short so this would have limited their shows, especially with other Open Class corps.
chadwick
Sorry to keep the rant going, but the more that I look at their intended schedule, the more that doesn't make much sense for such a new organization. None of their shows were in the southeast, and thus attracting new members wasn't going to happen. They could have begun their tour this week with shows in Mississippi, Alabama, the Atlanta Regional and wrapped up at the Nightbeat show in Winston-Salem on Sunday (though this is a Tour of Champions event). Only a week-long tour but so much more responsible. Oh well.....
N.E. Brigand
That stinks. How many members did they have, rehearsing hard for the past few weeks (including a preview show three days ago) for nothing? About 45? is there time for some of them to find a slot in a DCA corps? Does Carolina Gold have any holes to fill? Also, I'm going to take this unfortunate occasion to throw a question at some DCP participants. On several occasions over the past two years when good news about the number of active corps is posted here--for instance, that there were a half-dozen new corps last year, or three new corps this year--a handful of DCP members will post sarcastic, taunting messages in those discussions that read approximately as follows: "Oh, see how wrong you whiners are that drum corps is dying?" But when we get sad information like this, or about City Sound not performing this year, those same people are nowhere to be seen, not even to offer their condolences. I'm not looking to say, "I told you so" (because I never said that drum corps was dying, and really very few people ever say that), but an honest acknowledgment of both the ups and downs of the state of drum corps would be appropriate. DrumManTx
Yup. I'm not surprised with all the newer groups we've had that one of them folds, still sucks nonetheless. A little too ambitious I suppose. Just strengthens the limited tour approach that most of these new corps are using. oldsoprano
I feel terrible for all of those kids, but even more so for two of them who came over from England to march Coastal Surge. One is a good drummer who marched Surge last summer and could have gone "up the ladder" to another corps, so to speak, but decided to return to help build Surge and the other is a member of the guard. They marched together in a small corps in England and wanted to have the DCI experience. Welcome to America.
