Open Class Championship Seedings

Recommended Posts

It's been a little different each of the past three years.

In 2012, this was DCI's explanation:

"The performance order for the Open Class World Championship Semifinals, was determined by averaging scores from events on Aug. 3 in Oskaloosa, Iowa and Avon Lake, Ohio with scores earned on Aug. 4 in Niles, Mich.
Classified as an official DCI event since more than five corps performed, the Niles event was rained out with five groups left to perform. As a result, the scores of Blue Saints, Les Stentors, Colt Cadets, Raiders, Legends, Gold, Music City, Genesis and 7th Regiment were averaged, but the single score from Aug. 3 of Blue Devils B, Oregon Crusaders, Revolution, Spartans and Vanguard Cadets were used to seed the Open Class Semifinals."

In 2013, this was DCI's explanation:

"The performance order for the Open Class World Championship Semifinals was determined by averaging the participating corps' highest score at an Open Class tour event earned this week with scores from the event in Avon Lake, Ohio on Saturday, Aug. 3. For the Racine Scouts and Colt Cadets who were not in Avon Lake, and for Gold who was only in Avon Lake, their highest score for the week was used."

In 2014, this was DCI's explanation:

"The performance order for the Open Class World Championship Prelims was determined by averaging the participating corps' two highest scores earned at DCI Tour events between July 24 in Johnsonburg, Pennsylvania and August 2 in Avon Lake, Ohio."

If we assume that they'll try the 2014 system again, then I think we're looking for the corps' two highest scores from these shows:

St. Louis -- July 22

Sheffield -- July 24

Dixon -- July 24

Hamilton -- July 25

Oregon -- July 25

Waukesha -- July 27

Cedar Rapids -- July 27

Kalamazoo -- July 28

Johnsonburg -- July 30

Avon Lake -- July 31

St. Paul -- July 31

Troy -- August 1

Forest City -- August 1

Seeding updated to account for Avon Lake and St. Paul scores. Two percussion judges mean three decimal places. Most of them have one more chance Saturday to post a big number and improve their averages:

Open Class

1. 75.013 Blue Devils B

2. 74.225 Vanguard Cadets

3. 71.725 Legends

4. 71.538 Genesis

5. 70.700 Spartans

6. 69.813 Music City

7. 68.575 7th Regiment

8. 66.500 Gold*

9. 60.325 River City Rhythm**

10. 60.200 Colt Cadets

11. 60.150 Raiders

12. 56.125 Stentors

13. 51.713 Racine Scouts

14. 49.775 Blue Saints

International Class

1. 63.963 Jubal

2. 0.00 Gita Surosowan Banten***

3. 0.00 Chien Kuo***

*Average for Gold is based on just one score; the corps competes again on Aug. 2.

**River City Rhythm had completed their final pre-championship competition, so their average score is locked.

***These two international corps make their DCI debut at O.C. Prelims.

Every corps listed in the DCI schedule for Michigan City prelims also is shown in the LOS prelims line-up except for River City Rhythm. The River City Rhythm website indicates that the corps will be in Indiana all week. Did DCI neglect to include them in the Thursday prelims line-up?

Probably. There have been a number of small oversights like this on DCI's site.

For instance, the schedule for this past Thursday's competition in Johnsonburg doesn't list Jubal as one of the competitors, but they must have been there, since DCI has a score and recap for them.

Updated to account for Troy and Forest City scores:

Open Class

1. 76.513 Vanguard Cadets

2. 75.675 Blue Devils B

3. 72.763 Genesis

4. 72.338 Legends

5. 71.663 Spartans

6. 71.625 7th Regiment

7. 69.813 Music City

8. 67.125 Gold

9. 62.488 Raiders

10. 62.438 Colt Cadets

11. 60.325 River City Rhythm

12. 56.750 Stentors

13. 52.788 Racine Scouts

14. 49.825 Blue Saints

International Class

1. 65.000 Jubal

2. 0.00 Gita Surosowan Banten*

3. 0.00 Chien Kuo*

*These two international corps have their DCI debut at O.C. Prelims on Aug. 3.

SCVC's huge number puts them back on top. Just over one point separates Genesis at third from 7th Regiment at sixth. Raiders and Colt Cadets tied at Forest City, but Raiders bested Cadets by one tenth the day before, so their top two scores averaged is half a tenth higher.

Now the question is: will the Prelim seeding actually work this way, or is DCI opting for yet another new method this year?

DCI's announcement of World Class Prelims order for Thursday has 17 Open Class corps (order TBD) performing before Pioneer, so it does seem that all fourteen Open Class and three International Class corps appearing at Michigan City will be going to Lucas Oil.

The Prelim seeding order has been announced. I believe DCI has made an error. Can you spot it?

According to the article, we were using the right formula in this thread: "the following lineup is based upon the average of those corps’ two highest scores from shows held between July 22 and August 1." But if that's true, then how to explain this:

Stentors

52.200 -- July 24 @ Sheffield

53.250 -- July 25 @ Hamilton

55.300 -- July 27 @ Cedar Rapids

56.950 -- July 31 @ St. Paul

56.550 -- Aug. 1 @ Forest City

River City Rhythm

58.450 -- July 27 @ Cedar Rapids

62.200 -- July 31 @ St. Paul

I'll bet we see a change in the schedule!

Interesting to learn that Chien Kou is a high school.
