"Championship" design vs. performance

Recommended Posts

Inspired by a comment on the "Crown 2015" thread, I got to wondering...

What are some examples of shows that were "championship" level design but the performance just wasn't there. In other words...the garage members (design staff) had the car ready, but the driver (performance level) "missed a shift" and didn't quite pull out the win.

Crown 2012 comes to mind.

Conversely, what are some shows that you feel, from a design perspective, never really had a shot at winning regardless of how well it was performed?

Pretty much all the Corps that place below the top 3-4 placements most years really have no shot of winning no matter how well executed the show was, or will be executed.

I was going to say pretty much the same thing, but using 6-7th as the marker.

This year for instance (using nightbeat results)..

Let's give SCV or Bluecoats perfect 10s in all performance & achievement sub caps. Coupled with other scores not far off from 1st, they win. It's not until you get 4+ points down that this won't work.

I also didn't actually calculate anything and made this all up. I hate math, but yeah..

I dont think you have just design issues if youre placing below 6th or 7th. one area affects the other for sure .

6-7 will work... won't quibble on you coming in with a different marker, rancidrolla.

Phantom Regiment 2012 comes to mind. I feel like the design staff didnt know they would medal that year, and didnt design a show to "win". Therefore, I feel like 3rd place that year was pushing it and was as high as they couldve gotten.

Most of the Corps that have great Show Designs tend to be the top placing Corps that have the best design staffs. Because they have the best design staffs, they get the best talent at their camps to choose from. Its an interconnected dynamic. Corps that have known names for writing great Show Designs, don't have campers showing up each offseason that are " B " listers. Pacific Crest, Pioneer, Jersey Surf , etc re not going go come out next season with a Show Design that is so outstanding that if it wern't for inexperienced MM's they'd be competing with BD, Cadets for a DCI Title. Most of this falls into the realm of common sense too. It needs no explanation as to why we pretty much see the same BD Corps at or near the top each and every year for the last 3 decades now.. Trade BD's entire Design and Instructional Staff with that of Pacific Crest entire Design and instructional staff however, and BD would quickly sink like a stone in placement. Many of its talented MM's would run out of BD faster than a fire at a college frat house. And head up the Coast in the offseason to Diamond Bar for their new pilgrimmage. Its not going to happen, but it illustrates how inportant the adult created Show Design is to the overall placement. Its a magnet to the young of talent each offseason. In the case of BD, it has been this way since John Travolta was Vinnie Barbarino in Mr. Kotter's H.S. Class.

I am thinking about shows like Cadets 2010, Cadets 2012. In my opinion, there were definite design issues with both shows, but the performers did the best they could with what they were given. I will add Crown 2010, 2011, and 2014 as shows where design was never championship caliber.

There were a few glaring visual design issues in 2012 that impacted both performance and effect. For me the choice in color scheme alone held the program back effect wise severely. Granted their were some percussion issues too but that music book was awesome.
