ajlisko
Good one ... I just remembered that Sun and Sky both played Aquarius in 1969 ... the dawning of the G/F age in DCA ... :-) Yes... even though the Sun did rise a bit higher at Finals that year. Northern Thunder
I just remembered that Sun and Sky both played Aquarius in 1969 ... That was a VERY popular tune in '69: Blessed Sac Des Plaines Vanguard Dunkirk Patriots Knickerbockers La Salle Cadets Marching Ambassadors ND-ettes Royal Lancers (OR) St. Martin's Troubadors Seattle Imperials Skyliners Sunrisers Toronto Optimists Troopers Whalers
ajlisko
Dreitzer wrote the Aquarius chart for both the Skyliners and Skokie ... amazingly, the two numbers were distinctively different, tailored for the strength of each hornline ... the "siren" effect at the beginning of the Vanguard's version was stunning ... and the "power" of the final charge for NY was deafening - with only 39 horns that year! Maybe FTD can expound on Hy's writing technique here ... :-) That was a VERY popular tune in '69: Blessed Sac Des Plaines Vanguard Dunkirk Patriots Knickerbockers La Salle Cadets Marching Ambassadors ND-ettes Royal Lancers (OR) St. Martin's Troubadors Seattle Imperials Skyliners Sunrisers Toronto Optimists Troopers Whalers

ironlips
"Aquarius" That mello siren in Des Plaines was courtesy of Dave Hill, recently inducted into the Buglers Hall of Fame. He also penned "Let the Sunshine In" for them and became their principal arranger. That Vanguard chart Hy wrote stands out as one of his greatest, in my view. He was at the top of his game, and there isn't a musical moment to compare to that opener on the field today in terms of sheer excitement. If you listen to the recording, you can see the dust rising from the field, I swear.
elphaba01
"Grenada": "Grenada" was indeed the "OTL" for St Raphael's in 1962. "Macarena" came back in 1963 as their opening fanfare. My crystal ball of ancient tunes fogged over. "Experiment in Terror" received some VERY disparaging remarks from horn judge Don Angelica (And very bad horn score) at season's end. Strangely enough, another corps, the Golden Musketeers (NY) also played Experiment in Terror in 1963. I don't even know who the Golden Musketeers are. I remember the Barnum Festival of that year where the only corps that Didn't play it. the New York Skyliners, won the contest. ajlisko
Best version I ever heard of HD was Vasella's concert in 1964 ... all 6 soloists took a turn playing the solo in sequence ... two of them, Dom (RIP) and John DiQuatro eventually played with Sky in 72 and 73 ... Great tune for Drum Corps ... :-) "Phenoms": How about "Hello Dolly" in 1964.
