What a great night! Miley Cyrus and Britney Spears in drum corps!

Based on the performances I saw last night, I had predicted:

1. 82.0 -- SCVC

2. 80.0 -- BDB

3. 76.5 -- Legends

4. 76.0 -- Genesis

5. 75.0 -- Spartans

6. 74.0 -- 7th Regiment

7. 73.0 -- Music City

8. 68.0 -- Gold

9. 67.0 -- River City Rhythm

10. 64.0 -- Colt Cadets

11. 63.0 -- Raiders

12. 59.0 -- Stentors

1. 69.0 -- Jubal

2. 65.0 -- Gita Surosawan Banten

(I do wonder how many of these will fall when compared to World Class programs on Thursday. Several of them are well under W.C. timing requirements.)

I arrived just as the Chien Kuo High School Marching Band from Taiwan began their performance, and watched only about half of it from the far left entrance, so I had no guess as to their score. They march woodwinds as well as brass and percussion. GSB from Indonesia does not, but they use a woodwind instrument in the pit during their show. So that probably explains why those two are in International Class.

I've seen a video of BDB's show from last night. It completely fails to do justice to their prism props, which are variously colored with shimmering and almost continually changing hues.

But where is the performance element in the lighted prisms? Why should a drum corps get points for a blinking software-driven light show? Boy we are wandering away from what a drum corps performance used to be. Miked soloists and fancy light shows are the lowest common denominator in drum corps shows these days.
