Guardguy89
Another thing I'd like, since we're providing 2016 wish lists: a new ballad. I mentioned previously that, with a few exceptions (e.g., crab walk in 93, silver poles in 96), Phantom Regiment has not been a recent "innovator" in terms of visual design. But they were always good for introducing a new ballad to the activity. It could be argued that they haven't introduced a new ballad since 2007. They played some slow stuff from Turandot in 12, maybe some of the slow stuff in 10 was untouched by Glassmen. But picking nits aside, the Regiment hasn't given us something new ballad-wise in a while. Not only that, but in recent years they used a well-used ballad (Nimrod in 2013, a tune I associate with Crown), a ballad by James Horner (effing King Kong in 2014), and a less-than-inspired retread (Claire de Lune in 2015). Be innovators with the ballad! A few good ones that come to mind: - 1993, Novorossiisk Chimes - 1994, Claire de Lune - 1995, Paganini Variation 18 - 1996, Intro to the Fourth Ballet Suite (ballad-ish) - 1998, Un Bel Di - 2000, Transfigured Night (WOWWW) - 2001, Game of Pairs used before? - 2002, Shosty's Piano Concerto No. 2 - 2004, Oblivion - 2006, Ave Maria - 2007, Flower Duet (maybe the weakest part of the show, but it was new to the activity) I absolutely loved Flower Duet and thought it was one of the best ballads out there - different strokes for different folks I guess !!! jjeffeory
Like I've said, I think this team with the right music and theme from the coordinator could do wonders. They need a 2005 right now. No more retreads please..............give us Phantom........with a twist. Some modern orchestral juxtaposed with some classical? Throw in a minimalist piece? Just something fresh while still being you! Otherwise. Keep as many people there as necessary. They really need some consistency. Brass and percussion are fine, Kuhn did a great job in his 2nd year. Guard should be too? At least to my untrained eye. I think they'll be fine. This years show came together pretty nicely in the end overall. If anything, seemed like they could handle some more. I think the future can be bright, just don't dwindle it from day 1 with the show choice. This sounds like "On Air". I enjoyed that show, and they did well with it.
N.E. Brigand
Another thing I'd like, since we're providing 2016 wish lists: a new ballad. . . . they were always good for introducing a new ballad to the activity. Be innovators with the ballad! A few good ones that come to mind . . . - 2006, "Ave Maria" - 2007, "Flower Duet" (maybe the weakest part of the show, but it was new to the activity) I'm in general agreement with your wish, although I would add that: (1) it would indeed have been lovely for Phantom to have incorporated another Turandot ballad, like "Ho una casa nell'Honan", into their 2012 show; (2) by championship week, they had improved this iteration of "Clair de Lune" greatly from where it had been early in the season, so much that I found it to be the most effective part of their 2015 show; (3) strictly speaking, Franz Biebl's "Ave Maria" was introduced to the drum corps activity by the San Francisco Renegades (in 2005, I think it was, and quite nicely, too); and (4) I agree with GuardGuy89 that Phantom's version of "Flower Duet" was lovely. general_tsos_chicken2
Where's the announcement for the adams brass? I'm cautiously optimistic. If the line is near as good as their concert brass, it will be a very good thing.
