The Cavaliers 2016

Recommended Posts

In the spirit of a new season comes a new thread.

And what a way to start off the new season, with the hiring of a fantastic man and Cavalier as the Executive Director, Chris Lugo.

This is completely mindless speculation about things, but I can't come up with a better place to put it:

I want the Cavies to do Traditions for a New Era II next year.

And I want it to start with Bolcom Symphony #5.

The rest of the show can be the morph into whatever the Cavies of the next 20 years are going to be, and what that is, I have no idea. But I think they're ready for another morph of personality, the way that show was. And, in my mind, it has to start the way Traditions for a New Era ended.

ETA: All that being said, I look forward to seeing where they go after this. I was never much of a Cavies fan when I first got into the activity (my percussion instructors were all ex-Phantom), but the activity is better when The Cavaliers are strong.

Yeah 1998 has quite an interesting theme and idea, though I think 2001 was basically the new era and style.

I like the idea but what could be the new style? I really like the idea of early 90s style Cavaliers maybe late 80s. Aggressive (for its time) in your face, triangles all over the drill, and iconic full field forms (i.e. 1992 ballad set). Also lets get drum break drill like 91, or the double helix of 95. Maybe I'm totally describing another Cavalier Anthems.

'85-'06 was a great era for the Cavaliers. The android show was the peak of their success in terms of design and sound.

Wow, what can I say about Cavies? There were SOOOO many shows I loved from them since I started following the activity in 1995, but I think 2006 was my all time favorite. That show had so much power and the performance they put on to symbolize the cyborgs or androids really made me love them so much more. I would love to see them back in their spectacular runs they had in the past, but I know it will take time. I hope to see some great things from them next year and forward.

Kudos to Rosemont for donating $142,000 to the Cavaliers. This isn't the first time Rosemont has done so. It's great to see a home city appreciating a local asset. Here's hoping other locales pitch in as well.

Agreed; there was so much cool nuance with that show! I remember seeing all sorts of pre-season stuff from them (drill sheets, spring videos, etc) and thinking this was going to be amazing, and then when BD announced their Godfather show I thought there was no WAY BD was going to lose w/Godfather! Luckily for Cavaliers that show was unstoppable, even with a percussion section that seemingly failed to gel (at least relative to the rest of the program).

The amazing sound FX that they created acoustically to symbolize robotic stuff was so cool, and of course symbolizing the cyborg visual w/Terminator percussion motif sealed it for this movie nerd!

That show is probably my favorite show of its era, and in my Top 3 of the millennium

I agree. The Cavs have had some wonderfully designed and performed shows over the years. The 2006 Cavaliers production of " The Machine " was creative brillance, imo.... and thus is one of my all time favorite DCI shows ever.

Was that the year you have mentioned before that their percussion section left the zip code for several minutes?

No, Ghost.

That would be the 2002 the Cavaliers "Frameworks" show. They won with a 99.150, one of the highest scores in DCI history. That was the year they won this DCI Title ( and Percussion ) by planting their snare line, tenors, basses, etc in the middle of the show production, in the right, far backfield, with their backs facing the audience, and not playing anything at all on their Drums there for well over 3 minutes as they stood motionless. It worked for them however that year, as the Visuals by the others was positively outstanding. Now.... could the Cavaliers have won themselves ( or any other DCI Corps of today ) a DCI Title if their Guard stood in the far right backfield and stood motionless with their backs to the audience for over 3 minutes ? I know, I know, its a silly question, as of course a Corps couldn't win themselves a DCI Title with the Guard motionless for that long, in the back of the field, like that. Which only provides yet another concrete example that validates what I have been saying for awhile now on here as to where the most points are to be had on today's DCI judging sheets. However, my great liking of that 2002 Cavaliers Frameworks show didn't have anything to do with the Drummers not playing anything at all for over 25% of the timed competition. I was able to look past that.... and apparently, so wern't the judges. If you can get away with not playing anything at all on your musical instrument, and additionally not moving for 1/4th of your show, because you play your instrument well the other 3/4ths of the time ( and your Visuals and Guard throughout are outstanding ), why not design shows like this ? Especially, if these Visual oriented shows gets you into the winners circle, more oftentimes than not.
