KeithHall
This morning as I was showering (I know, where's he going with this?) I had this thougt that we need to get the history and the stories from drum corps in NY (and other states should do this too). We are losing men and women who knew the history. I can only comment on the 70's and up BUT there are people out there that have a whole lot more to talk about than me. Tom Peashey, Dick Hoppe, Jim, Donny and Tommy Allen, and the list can go on and on. Should I start up a NY Historical post and lets see where we go? Maybe others in oter states and provinces can do the same. There are some fun and serious stories out there that should be told. Once we are gone, no one will know what we did. Yeh I know there may be stories that shouldn't be repeated but since these things happened decades ago....who cares! Well? Anyone?

Northern Thunder
There was an historical NY drum corps site (forum) on the web some years ago. You had to be registered as a former NY corps member to join, so I couldn't access all of what was on there. There is also this one for NYC area corps: http://newyorkdrumcorppeople.ning.com/
ajlisko
Plus ... I seem to recall Keith setting up a NY thread a few years ago where we really got into identifying the NYC corps, Upstate, Western Tier and LI corps in pretty good depth ... maybe someone could find it in the archives ... :-) There was an historical NY drum corps site (forum) on the web some years ago. KeithHall
Can't recall the year, maybe 1973 or 74 BUT..... NYS AL Championships were at Syracuse. Our corps (Royal Coachmen) was staying at the NYS Fairgrounds Youth Hostel (I think that was the name) and at 1 am a corps starts cranking up to rehearse AT 1 AM! Our one drum instructor goes out to ask them if they could not do that. He returns and says, it's Mark Twain Cadets! We took it that since they continued no one was going to shut them down except the police.
KeithHall
In 1976 we (Royal Coachmen) had a decent corps (36 brass, 24 perc, 8 rifles and 18 or 20 flags)....anyways we went to a show in Greece, NY. We had a good show that afternoon and thought we did really well. Got the results at retreat (Remember those?) and got beat by corps that we really shouldn't have been beat by. We huddled up by the buses and our director was ticked off but our Music Arranger Ted Key got in front of us and was visibly upset and used some words that started with F! Now if you knew Ted, he was a pretty relaxed guy. He left to try to find the judges and not sure what happened after that but the next week or so we ended up bringing in Joe Kraft, Ron Bowks and a drum guy to work with us the rest of the year. lindap
Plus ... I seem to recall Keith setting up a NY thread a few years ago where we really got into identifying the NYC corps, Upstate, Western Tier and LI corps in pretty good depth ... maybe someone could find it in the archives ... :-) Before DCP's upgrade a few years ago, I was able to use the search feature to success. I'd often add unique keywords to my posts to be able find things later. Since the upgrade, one must use the advanced search and enter a number of selection criteria. The result is a maximum of 4 pages or 40 posts and recent history only. I did an experiment tonight:-) did an advanced search for "Royal Coachmen" as posts under topics. A few of the results from 4 pages are listed below with topic title and URL. I've been reading DCP since 2007 and contributed a few photos. I've enjoy DCP but find it hard to find things now. I like that some people are bringing back old threads. Thanks to you. A second read is good. Personally, its easier for me to post photos on DCP's photo topics than try to find a previous thread that I can finally talk about. Hopefully one can find NYer's answers below? Ghost
Reminiscing is fine, but maybe save the topics Linda P has listed and add to them.
ironlips
There's a story told around the campfire that Ghost keeps a barn full of exotic percussion instruments and is a kind of drum corps Harry Parch. At least, that's the way I heard it, years ago. At the time I considered the source reliable. Can anyone confirm, or is this Urban Legend?
