Triple Forte Posted March 6, 2004 Share Posted March 6, 2004 (edited) Hi All I was watching some older tapes that other day and was wondering which Sky Ryder show people liked the most back in the mid to late 80's ? As much as I absolutely loathe the millions of West Side story shows put on year after year after year, this one definitely seemed original. From the different corps costuming to the great acting by the guard, and I think 311 drummer Chad Sexton marched this year as well, it was a great edition of the Sky Ryders. 84BDsop Posted March 6, 2004 Share Posted March 6, 2004 I voted for 88, but I agree with Chris...these three are very VERY difficult to choose between. 86 was a fine return to the top 12 and the closing is fab! 87...the ONLY WSS show that comes close to 84 Garfield. The most theatrical version...the absolute BRILLIANCE of not allowing the upper and lower brass ti mix visually unless the Jets & Sharks were in the same scene together (Mambo and the Rumble)...and frankly...if you weren't crying at th every end, you have no feeling. 88...wow...had the pitential to be soooo cheesy and bando, but my GOD what a job! Top to bottom the BEST Sky show ever...entertainment up the wazoo...the MOST hypin' guy in the snare line (black guy in the middle)...the BEST plume action you will EVER seen from the mello line on the last horns down...etc....the BEST 12th place show you will ever find...would've placed higher in almost any other year,.,, One of those shows I kinda wish I could go back in time & march... Cop Posted March 6, 2004 Share Posted March 6, 2004 Sky 1986 Tommy K did an OUTSTANDING job with the guard, at the same time his winter guards were kicking ###. Malibu Posted March 6, 2004 Share Posted March 6, 2004 Although I really enjoyed the Wiz show, West Side is my favorite. The design of matching color guard unis with large flowing flags were just gorgeous! The main corps proper, dressed in neutral colors (black, white, gray) to give the musical support as well as intriguing drill design was well thought out. 84BDsop Posted March 6, 2004 Share Posted March 6, 2004 Mildly funny thing about the guard...every time I watch that show...right after Tony gets show they ganghs are gathering around Tony & Maria while the pit is starting "Somewhere" There's one guy from the Sharks part off the guard...holding a rifle...moustache, suspenders o nhis pants...the bottom hem of his "wifebeater" top half in & half out of his trous....looks like some of my relations!! RichCranford82 Posted March 7, 2004 Share Posted March 7, 2004 I'll go you one further G, 81 Sky has always been my favorite, probably because it was the first time I ever saw them and the soprano work alone blew me away.
