DaKman
some of you are familar with Finale/Sibelius/Soundfonts and arranging, scoring and recording....with the newest addition to the soundfont family, Tapspace's VDL2 www.tapspace.com produces realistic marching and concert percussion sounds, taken from the sampling of SCV's percussion "department", enhancing the recordings of both wind and percussion arrangers. It is very complete, but limited with the specific sound preferences that SCV utilizes. From here, I have thought about, with the help of Native Instruments and recording technologies, producing a complete Marching Band/Drum Corps Soundfonts, specializing in the unique sounds of the entire ensemble. This .SF or .SF2 format utilizes the PC's or Mac's soundcard, those compatible, to interpret the wav sampling files into MIDI (musical instrument digital interface). It will produce realistic ensemble effect for desired composition for use with Finale2006 (using all 128 channels) and the newest Sibelius music writing/notation/scoring software. the most notible difference will be the marching percussion, front ensemble and differential wind sounds, specific to this idiom. Although a current-up-to date system will be required, including about 7GB of free hard disk space, 512 or greater Ram (1 Gb or more is better), Windows XP, Pentium 4/Athlon 1 GHz minimum, 2 GHz or better OR Macintosh OSX 10.3 or higher, G4 733 MHz minimum, 1.6GHz or higher ...here is a list of what i have thought of...please give me feedback or comments. DaveG
Hey i totally agree with that. Iv been using Finale since the 2002 model, and i noticed that they are leaving out alot of the necessities that you need when composing. Great ideas i think. DaKman
if you are like me, i use this software soley for marching band/drum corps/percussion (concert and marching) arrangement...would be nice to have a one stop shop for this. with finales 2006 the midi channels have been extended from 16 to 128, depending on your machine's capability, without loss of voicings and no distortion. I have some arrangements I have done that can come close to what i want (be happy to send you some demos). what i do alot of times is use finale to arrange for winds only, battery percussion and front ensemble percussion (sometimes a solo track, because solo instruments sound differnt from ensemble and need to be a lead voice)..export them as wav or mp3s...then mix them in a sound editor like Adobe Audition (allows me to create multiple sections...full trumpet section of 20, for example)...the marching percussion soundfonts i use (not the shipped RowlOff sounds with finale-they are horrible) are already recorded as sections and have a full battery sound. (i use a free soundfont called marchingperc.sf2...google it and you can also use it-easy to import into Finale, i dont know about sibelius) the new Garriton Personal Orchestra (GPO) shipped with Finale 2006 is great to fill in blanks, but must be done seperately, due to the reason it can not be used with the smartsound snth fonts....but the marimba and xylo are recoreded with soft mallets, instead of bright and articulate...also there are several options in the percussion line, including multiple gongs, tam tams, really good concert bass drum, concert snare with roll options, a many hand cymbal effects and cymbal rolls...adds variation to the overall arrangement. To get a snare line playing ride cymbal (that unique, articulate and cutting timbre from the field that only 8 or 10 snares can produce by playing on 18 or 20" field pairs) I will duplicate the ride part on three different ride cymbals that finale offers. to get cymbal roll/timpani roll fzp or fp or simple crescendos, i also have to play around a bit to keep them from sounding too "maching created" sounds like a lot of work, but it really isnt once you get organized and know what you want (and know what works and doesnt)...it really works well...like i said, i wouuld be happy to send you a demo to show how "unlimited", once you get your imagination working, all this really is! it becomes more a hobby....will be posting a page on my server that will display mp3 demos of such...hopefully, i can encourage others to create and will display in the catagories of: marching band, drum corps, percussion ensemble, street beats and cadences, concert band and miscellaneous compositions and scores. Let me know if you are interested! Edited November 7, 2005 by DaKman
