Tonight I was basically in the field, so musically they are pulling you in and taking you exactly where you want to go! I’ll have my next opportunity to see this live and from a higher vantage in San Antonio. But I have no doubt this show is going to go far, but I don’t have anything to compare it to other than the stuff floating around the sites! -

The show is quite intense, but we were 2 rows back from the pit, so my take is strictly from a musical perspective! The sounds coming from all over the field are really creating this ambiance that you’re wanting from the show. The videos I had seen prior to tonight do not do the show justice! The ending is strong, but feels like there is something more that can drive home the theme. I know the designers aren’t done with it yet, and I hope there can be a little more integration of the props and the performers on the “chariots” throughout the show. -

Music City - amazing show! My wife’s favorite of the night! Some very effective use of silence to draw us in, and that horn line is powerful! It was a little windy so the color guard had a few drops in high profile spots, won’t be an issue indoors! Spirit of Atlanta - Rocket Man is going to take Spirit to the moon and it’s going to be a fun ride! This show is my favorite of theirs in quite a while and I can’t wait to see it again. The floral soloist wins the best solo of the night! A talented group of performers now let’s get to cleaning! Carolina Crown - Now onto the home team, my alma mater! This horn line means business their book is challenging and their use of the field is amazing! I couldn’t help but hear a lot of people questioning the show and props, but even without the theme and dramatics of the props, this show has legs and they are off and running! Encore - Crown played us out with Candide, the opener of my age out year! Tears welled up as I had no idea that was coming! It was surreal to hear it from the stands and I wanted more but I’ll take what I can get! Thank you to all the corps and the high school for providing us all with great food and a clean stadium! It was a great first show of the season for me and the wife, and I can’t wait to see everyone in San Antonio! -

Carolina Gold - small group this year. We enjoyed their rendition of Never Enough from The Greatest Showman! Only two pieces prepared, but fun all the same! Impact - They came out and played a good show based on James Bond themes. The percussion section was jamming the whole time, and if anyone knows the service dog out there, know we have given him a temporary name of Dennis! Atlanta CV - Let me just say WOW! They blew us away from their first note! 10/6 is the title of the show and it’s based on the Mad Hatter story! Great props and great use of Mad World to really sell the theme. Great use of the field, staging was amazing, but caused some timing issues. It’s early and I know these guys will get it ironed out over the summer! Memphis Blues - Who doesn’t love Rhapsody in Blue?! They are having fun from start to finish and they are playing confidently and well! I can’t wait to see this show grow over the next few weeks! Awesome surprise! Heat Wave - Great group of kids with a fun rock n roll themed show! Still working on getting the full show on the field, but will be fun for the crowd once it’s all out there!- 66 replies

The wife and I are here! I may leave a little blurb at intermission and after scores. My fingers have chili all over them! -
Sad to have come all this way to have a rain out, but I get it and glad the corps are all staying safe. The wife and I are at Bourbon on Main and Gervais if anyone wants to sulk over a nice drink!

Can someone point me to a good break down of the show? I’ve looked and have not seen one really dissecting the show. Much thanks in advance!

Second half of the show was wonderful! Mind you, my seats were right up against the field (as intended…BLOW MY FACE OFF!) so I didn’t get a very good visual read of the shows. Pacific Crest- My home team came out looking amazing! The white unis with the pop of gold looks really nice when corps proper. I love the musical selections and their line has some great moments. There were some front to back and side to side timing issues that caught me off guard. I look forward to hearing this show grow and come together!! Academy- lots of color on the field and I like it! The theme is pretty clear with the darker colors leading into the light. Some great hits and articulation in the first half of the show. The final movement needs some tlc but we are still in the first weekend of performances, it will be fleshed out in time! I love this ballad a ton!! Mandarin- This show has all the bells and whistles we’ve become accustomed to, but this show design and musical selections are just so engaging and they are playing the hell out of it! The energy coming from the performers is electric and all I can say is I WANT MORE!! This corps is going to make a name for themselves this year! Blue Devils- What can I say. They are playing well, they are dancing well, and I can’t wait to see it again. This performance may very well be my favorite Blue Devils show of all time. My father and I are still in awe of that performance and if you have the chance to see it, you definitely should! Holy crap! WOWOWOW!!! Okay, a long drive back to Los Angeles! Have a wonderful night everyone!

Of the corps I was able to see: Vessel- just caught them from the concession stand so not much to report. Blue Devils C- Very entertaining music and props. A ton of quality solos throughout the show! The age range is dramatic this year but they are having a ton of fun! Gold- This was the first big/full sound of the night. They have a wonderful look on the field and some interesting stage/props they move and manipulate throughout the show. The middle/low brass had some wonderful moments and I want more! Blue Devils B- Very impressive show from start to finish! I love the flash of yellow on the arms and the lapel, it is very effective when they move quickly. They have a clean and crisp sound with some great attacks! There was a snare drummer without their drum for the second half of the show, I didn’t see what happened but they were air drumming with the best of them! i can see both the Gold and Blue Devils B corps doing well in Indy!

Who would ever think to judge one corps against another? I would hope there isn’t a thread specifically dedicated to giving their personal opinions on the outcome of the entire season based on nothing more than bias, wishes, and prayers! *Looks at the thread just under this one* oh shucks…
