As a judge, I can’t see everything at once. I may judge a band one day and see a different level of content the next day based on what I sample. I like to feel like I am balanced and fair but I’m also not watching the same things back to back. Every time I watch a show as a fan, I also try to focus on different sections, points of focus (or outside the focus) and I pick up new details every single time.

I hope my kid wants to do drum corps at some point. I will fully support them for the work ethic and everything else they will gain. I will figure out the money just like my parents did for me. My 13 old does competitive dance. 6 competitions. This past season was a little over $6,000 before I include any travel expenses, hotels, food. That was a year that they didn't go to Nationals. My oldest is playing hockey. It's $1,850 in fees for his league for 10 games. Does not include gear, tryout fee, team jersey, hotels, food, expenses. I don't feel like Drum Corps is way out of range of any other youth sports. Neither of these are highly competitive groups compared to some others in the region.

Tariff's are misunderstood. My company assembled parts in PA based off of components made in China. 400+ jobs assembling and shipping parts. When the tariffs went in place in 2018, it was cheaper to do the assembly in Mexico. he assembled part had a lower rate than the components themselves based on the HTS codes. That immediately put plans in motion to shut down all US operations and within a year, we moved all assembly out of the country. Before the move, we added tariff charges to the majority of our customers as a separate invoice line item. The business wanted to pass on that cost. I don't know it's the same for Conn-Selmer, but it's most likely cheaper to assemble in China, save money and pass any tariff on to the consumer.

Yes. Ask any member or staff. Unless they've changed their approach, Bluecoats definitely start their spring training with no drill learned in advance. The first few days of spring training is only technique. I'm sure ideas and planning have been done, but John V. writes during the day, they learn 5-10 pages of whatever he writes the next morning or night and the process continues all the way through. That lets them rewrite what's not working, create some more organic moments, and they pace it out to finish up a few days before their debut. If there's no drill to learn, then they will just clean what they have or fill in chorography. The advantage of using is UDB is you can push out new drill to the members and staff minutes before or during a rehearsal.

There are some corps like Bluecoats and Blue Devils that do not start writing until spring training starts. It allows things to develop differently over time. I would love to hear about the corps that is working on 2027 drill!

I was talking to members (and some younger staff) this past summer that had never heard of DCP. They only used reddit.

Shows are much more complex from a time and space standpoint. They need to accurately communicate time and for the majority of the shows, they are not a metronome. Time is primarily being controlled from the center snare or by other individuals as the pulse pocket moves. As a performer, what does “emotion” from a drum major mean? I played my parts to the correct dynamic levels, in time based on my responsibilities and with the blend and balance around me. Emotion from someone’s hands or face should not alter the approach especially for 20-30% of the show when we were not supposed to be on the hands and listening back to the pulse behind us. This activity has always stressed to practice the same way you would perform.

Do you know anything about cymbal technique and sound quality? A cymbal tech is critical to any cymbal line in the activity. Did your corps not have a quad, bass tech or snare tech?
