The judges' opinions are all that matters for the awarding of a score. But I wouldn't say they are the only opinion that matters. There are many measures of success that aren't a number on a scoresheet. -

Ok, I'll risk a response. Here's something that gets mentioned every now and then, but usually gets pretty roundly rejected very quickly. Why is there no criterion in the GE judging sheets that allows the judges to gauge audience reactions. "You had them on their feet" "Huge ovation there for that section" "The crowd was literally holding their breath during that quiet emotional moment, you pulled them right in" Not suggesting that there be an applause-o-meter or anything, and I recognize that there will always be a home team bias, but if we want to demonstrate that a corps has communicated their ideas well it seems to me that the reactions of those being communicated to are a valuable indicator. Naturally the judges with their technical training and experience will be able to see and evaluate a performance in far greater depth than an average audience member, and that should remain the primary basis of their scoring, but what would be the harm in letting them also factor in a little of what they see happening in the stands? -
I'm sure this show is going to be great. Bluecoats have been on a tear for a decade+ creating amazing and entertaining shows. I do kind of miss the days though when the show designs were "we're going to play some jazz" or "we're going with Spanish music this year" or "we're doing a classical composer show", not some exploration of grad school physics with a bunch of deep references.... "oh look, the guard arranged their poles in the form of a Faraday cage, and that soloist inside is protected from the battery..."

Freak injuries in drum corps

Have to mention 2010 Crown finals. One of the mellophone players snapped his leg while hitting the final company front. He had to be helped to the sidelines by judges and staff while the corps finished their show. -
2008 was my favorite Crown show, but I don't think it was their "best". To me best connotes cleanest, hardest, most jaw-dropping. While 2008 is my favorite, I think in terms of brilliant horn clarity. degree of difficulty and, for lack of a better term, balls, I think you need to look at 2013-15. That, to me, was their peak performance level.
