Lack of video copies is huge disservice to MMs
jasgre2000 replied to jasgre2000's topic in DCI World Class Corps Discussions
As someone that enjoys watching drum corps shows from the past, I strongly disagree that it is a "waste." And I'm sure the people that march in the shows that are not available would feel even more strongly about that. Youtube videos are great, but they are sporadic and not legal to download ... and rarely stay up for very long. -

I hate it when people air their dirty laundry like this. I get it ... it sucks to be fired. But burning your bridges publicly is not a good look and makes you a less attractive hire to future employers. And who would want to get fired in a long, drawn out conversation? 45 seconds sounds perfect. -

I don't doubt that’s the excuse that is given. I do doubt its accuracy. DCI already has a website that offers digital audio downloads . The additional cost of adding videos would not be significant. The infrastructure is there. And when the CEO is getting paid more than $250k plus bonuses, for an organization that is largely inactive for more than half the year, I have a hard time swallowing the claim that it is “cost prohibitive.” It’s a matter of priorities, not ability. And it’s obvious this is not a priority, which I find regrettable. -
I think the Blue Knights present an interesting case study here. Mark Arnold was the corps director for about 35 years, gives up the reigns for 3 years, and then comes back for the last two years. So far BK's performance, in terms of placement, has been identical since Arnold came back to what it was during the first two years under Belcher, but (based on my perception, which may not be accurate) there does seem to be more confidence in the design and the performance. I don't know what Arnold's long term plans are, but I think it will be pretty interesting to see if BK can get back up to placing in that 6-9 range, where they were before COVID, if he sticks around for a few more years.

Server space is super cheap now compared to what it was when DCI was hosting all the videos over a decade ago. I know it's not exactly the same thing, but I have over 100TB of space on a home server and it didn't cost that much. Hell ... there are people privately hosting the same videos online right now (illegally). It's not cost prohibitive. That can't be the reason. If someone is telling you that, they aren't being honest. -

I don't see why it would cost DCI anything to make digital downloads available for purchase. The person purchasing the video would be paying whatever licensing fees would be required to download the video. The BluRays were more expensive than your typical Blu Ray, likely because of the licensing fees that had to be paid up front to create the media. You have to pay the licensing fee every time a Blu Ray was created, regardless of whether it is purchased at all. It makes sense why that would be a money losing endeavor for whoever was paying those production costs. But the costs are miniscule compared to the Blu Rays when all you are doing is hosting digital videos. The videos already exist. There is no extra production costs. The only costs would be website hosting/server fees. Copyright licensing costs does not make sense as a reason not to make them available at all for a fee. The only reason it wouldn't make sense is if there were no demand for them at all, which we know isn't true. -
A lot can happen in 15 years. (G7 proposal)

If that plan had been adopted, imagine where the Mandarins would be right now ... relegated to a "Class A" regional corps with no revenue sharing or support. -

Yeah, there's some good ideas in there that make some sense, but the approach and attitude was ridiculous. -

SCV in 3rd in percussion ... and it wasn't close. A bit surprising. Must have had a rough night there. -

BAC did not have my favorite show this season, but I can't tell you how happy I am right now. 2000 was the first year I watched DCI finals and BAC's RED show absolutely captured my heart. I've been a fan ever since. To see them rise to the top of this activity, after being treated as an underdog for so long, is one of the best things that's happen in my DCI fandom. While I preferred SCV's and Bloo's shows this year, seeing BAC break through that false G7 barrier is so cathartic and good for the activity. And it was well deserved. Out of this world talent and performance tonight by the #### ing Crusaders! I hope every season after this is as close and compelling as this one. -
