  1. OT: This stadium looks like a mid-major college stadium with a cruise ship parked on the other side. O.o

  5. I just wish Surf can figure out how to be entertaining while also marching and playing clean. Imagine how many more fans they'd have performing Saturday night in Indy (and how much more influential their design style might be if they could have high success).

  6. Some may have missed that Mr. J. Mason posted this rep on the program thread last night: "An update for everyone regarding our 75th anniversary show. The Madison Scouts musical selections are: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 by Brian Tyler Corps of Brothers Fanfare by Robert W. Smith Night on Bald Mountain by Modest Mussorgsky The Battle Rages by Lee Beddis, Nick Pourcho and Robert W. Smith Afghanistan 2025 by Jack Wall You'll Never Walk Alone by Richard Rogers, Oscar Hammerstein " Super! Can't wait to see what's in store on the field in front of Sean Hadley!

  8. Interesting that you got negs. There's really nothing that you said that was truly negative. I LOVE Surf, and I agree that if they were cleaner, they would be in front of more folks. I am sure that Bob Jacobs and crew are working on that, and can. not. wait. to see their show multiple times this year!

  9. Just got done listening to the video game source material from above - now that is some good stuff right there! Given Robert W. Smith's track record in general and with Madison as of late, I'm very much looking forward to hearing what he does with these selections!

  16. Got mine today - here are my humble thoughts: 1 - Having 72 Kingsmen on there is great, and the sound is excellent. I think they synced the audio from the Kobold DCI recording to the video. Its very good, and the quality of the black and white is rather good considering the age of the video and where it came from. 2 - 76 BD, 82 BD, and 83 Garfield sound wonderful, and the picture is definitely cleaner 3 - 87 Garfield - WOW, great sound in my opinion compared to the original, picture is cleaner, and an added twist - somehow Tom Blair and his crew were able to pull the sound from the soloist at the very end so you can actually hear him over the crowd. They took out some of the crowd noise, so purists may not like it, but its cool actually hearing the soloist at the end. And I don't think its a dub from another recording, because I have the semifinals video and it doesn't sound the same. 4 - 88 Madison - great picture and great sound. I always thought 88 was great picture wise and sound wise anyway, but its even better here 5 - 95 Cavies - this was the one I wanted to hear most, because the original sound was awful back when it was first released in 95. Its DEFINITELY improved - not all the high "tingy" sounds anymore, broader, and video seems more in sync with audio than the original. For all of us who have been waiting to hear the 95 sounds corrected, this is certainly improved. 6 -96 BD - see 95 Cavies above. Same thing, much better audio, great pics 7 - 99 Vanguard - excellent, great sound, pic improved 8 - 2000 Cadets, 2002 Cavaliers, 2003 BD - all better, great sound 9 - 08 Phantom - yes, the copyright "edit" is still there, but wow, the picture is as close to being HD as can be without it actually being HD - looks great, and the sound is awesome. I honestly wish they would re-release the whole 2008 set again on blu-ray cleaned up like this. Would be nice to see 08 BD, 08 Crown, 08 Cavies and the rest of the top 12 cleaned up with great sound on bluray. I love this Blu-ray, hope you all do too leed17

  19. You don't mind if I disagree with essentially every syllable of your post do you? Only 2 things work? Volume and Mass? Yikes! Did you hear 84 Cadets' "I Had a Love" ??? I could do this forever... The activity still works - these are still kids - I know - I've taught 'em and my daughter is one of them. I hope my grandson will do it in a couple of years. And the show designers are not failed Broadway designers, they're successful Music in Motion designers, or trying to become successful in some cases. I respect your right to your opinion. I couldn't disagree with you more if someone paid me to.

  20. Now that the Super Bowl will be played at the new 49ers Stadium in 2016, http://sports.yahoo.com/news/nfl--san-francisco-wins-bid-for-super-bowl-l-185056782.html . Wouldn't it be cool if DCI decided to bid for the Stadium in 2017 for World Championship? After all, it would be nice if DCI would come to the West Coast again for the second time in its history. Not to mention that it is SCVs 50th anniversary. What could be better? Eh, I can dream, can't I?

  22. Snag a spot in a corps this summer if you can. There are probably some openings in some of the Open Class horn lines and World Class corps like Pioneer too. Check out the other forums and ask around. I don't know where you're located geographically, but marching DCA this summer wouldn't be a bad idea either. Any experience you can get marching on mello between now and the next round of audition camps will be invaluable. Find a good teacher and take some lessons if you're not already. IMO... a trumpeter would be better than a horn player. Most real horn players hate the mellophone and there are more similarities between mello and trumpet than mello and horn anyway; most composers write for mello as if it's an alto trumpet anyway. Develop a consistent practice routine that covers all aspects of playing if you don't have one already; do it every day too. (Remember, you'll be competing with college music majors next winter.) Arban's is fantastic and it's a book you'll be able to use for the rest of your life. You'll get your money's worth for sure. I have specific page numbers and exercises if you're interested in that. Etudes and simple songs are great too since you're just getting started. Play everything can get your hands on! Transposing is a useful skill too. You never know when it will come in handy. Maybe see if you can get your hands on some corps audition packets just to get a better idea of what they're looking for at that level and the type of abilities you need to develop. Also, work out if you're not in great shape already. Strengthen that core and run. You'll be glad you did. And if you are in great shape... keep improving. I hope this helps.

  23. If I may be so bold ( an I will be).... DCI is a guest in this and any stadium. Most likely there is a fee involved in doing so, regardless of how big or small. Since it's such a huge issue to you, why don't you ask DCI what the fee is, and then pay it for them annually. Then your viewing pleasure will be restored.

  26. My first Memorial Day parade was in 1949, only four years after the end of WW II. It still meant something. Marched Memorial Days with the same corps until '61. After a break of a few years in the Army, I started doing something on Memorial Day weekend that I've continued since then. Wherever I'm living I go to the nearest veterans' cemetery (or civilian cemetery with a lot of veterans) and plant flags. It started when I went to visit a college classmate who was killed in Viet Nam and I saw that there were no flags or flowers on his or other veterans' graves. Just seems like the right thing to do.

  28. :blink:/> really... :thumbdown:/> :thumbdown:/> :thumbdown:/> That's a pretty rude generalization, at best. As someone who was at 2007 Championships week in Pasadena, I didn't see a lot of that stuff you proclaim. I know you're probably just trolling and I shouldn't take the bait, but if you're going to make asinine over-generalizations perhaps your memory is a bit foggy and you forgot that the crowd was actually kinda surprisingly friendly towards Cadets Finals night. edit: hey I got some negatives but no actual intelligent reply - yea idiotic lack of discourse!!

  29. Exactly the spirit I was looking for ... GET INVOLVED on Memorial Day ... I don't drum anymore but every year I march in a few parades with Sky's Alumni with my Air Horn or DMing when needed or handing out water ... or whatever is needed ... you don't have to be active to participate ... marching is honoring these heroes ... marching to me is honoring the Garbarina Mazarakos AL Post #1523, the Harry Condon AL Post #11, the Raymond W. Harris VFW Post #145, and my day will end at the fabled Hawthorne NJ AL Post #199 followed by some after glow at the Hasbrouck Heights NJ VFW Post #4591 It's Memorial Day ... get involved ... honor your drum corps tradition ... honor those little Posts where it all started for you ... honor the fallen heroes ... :-)

  30. If the event were to move to Santa Clara, which side of the stadium would be used? On one side, you have too many suites and not enough general seating. On the other side, you have plenty of general seating, but no suites. Are suites a necessity for drum corps events? No. But I'm sure some of the suits and donors of DCI would prefer to have them, and they're the ones with all the influence.

  34. I remember complaints last year of BD barely even performing on the West Coast, and having more rehearsal/off days than anything else once the competition season started. I think a lot of those days were System Blue camps also... but still non-DCI tour events.

  35. I agree Maggie-Belle - you have Blue Devils, Santa Clara Vanguard, Pacific Crest, Blue Knights, Crossmen, Oregon Crusaders, Academy, Seattle Cascades, Troopers, BDB, SCVC, all west of the Mississippi. Its about time DCI relooked going West (contract or no contract with Indy). The West gets a token east coast corps each year that comes West in the early season and by July all the corps have departed east. And your right - what a perfect place to host DCI Finals than the new 49ers Stadium in Santa Clara. If its good enough for the Super Bowl it should be good enough for DCI.

  36. Just dug up my Les Metro hat from the closet. A little scrubbing, good as new. Hmm. I should wear this to a show. Maybe down to Nokesville. I will wear it somewhere for certain. Problem is, the corps might get blinded by the hat. The Milts used to call this my "Rainbow Brite" hat when I wore it to rehearsals. I got my MBI hat, a CV hat, and this one. Heck Fran, I should lend you this neon-rainbow abomination for a show to go with your shirts.

  37. And that is still an issue today. Tolerance, the subjective assessment of what is "clean" and what is not, is still a major part of the training and experience one acquires before becoming a judge - just as it was in the days of the tick system. Personally, I think the current judging system fails to capture the finer performance variations from day to day between close competitors. Judges spend 12 minutes telling their recorders how wonderful each performance is, then they spend seconds writing down numbers that are more likely to match the recent scoring pattern than the performance of the day. Neither the tick system nor the buildup system of today are perfect. If I had the power, I would overhaul the judging system. Performance judging would be a combination of qualitative ensemble judging (like today) and quantitative section judging (like the tick system). GE (at least, at major events) would be a combination of caption judges familiar with the programs, and overall effect judges seeing all the corps for the first time. Aside from that, I would also change the rules regarding equipment. Some complain about the slow pace of a drum corps event and the excess equipment that often adds to show delays. I would enact a common sense limit to equipment - corps can use only what the corps members can bring on and off the field themselves. In Japan, corps set up in one minute flat using this approach. We would need a little more time (bigger fields), but would still see much quicker entry and exit. I might elaborate on the above idea by expanding judging to cover the entire time a corps is allotted to enter, perform and exit, with the objective of incentivizing corps to minimize setup time and rewarding those who figure out how to eliminate awkward delays. I would also like to see governance changes that give open-class corps some sort of actual membership in DCI, and put the working BOD in the hands of someone other than just the most competitive corps directors. But if I had the power, why would I give it up?

  38. You're not telling me anything new with the tolerance (don't forget I did DCA, RCA, ICA). Can still hear either Larry or Barney yelling "It's DCA this weekend... execute #### it!". And ye olde "Who's judging tonight... ####!!!" I was thinking of an early show we attended and people around us caught some drill screw ups. Woman next to me said "That will cost them." My thought was "not like it used to" as the entire corps was moving different ways at the time and the screw ups were buried toward the middle. IOW - people in the stands could see things bad enough to be ticed... but it doesn't count.

  41. I'm going to call your bluff on this one. Math involved. Citations below. Let's assume that the only events that occur at Lucas Oil are Pro and College Football (Colts and the Big Ten Championship game, 9 games) and DCI championships. Using the capacity figure from Wikipedia (62,421) and multiply that over the nine games, you obtain a total of 561,789 attendees. If you use the figures from 2012 championships, a total of 36,494 tickets were purchased for the event. If the tickets were priced the same, the DCI number would only constitute 6.1% of their revenue. However, seeing as the average ticket price for a Colts game in 2009 was $86.50 (which has since gone up) is higher than the average ticket for a given DCI championship event, that reduces the percentage of revenue even lower than 6.1%. Take into account the other revenue they obtain through BOA, State sports championships, concerts, etc., DCI does make a contribution to the revenue, but not that significant. That being said, they shouldn't at all feel obligated to spend the money removing the logo. 42. How abut this jras: DCI procures the $720,000,000 to build a stadium, places a DCI logo in the middle of the field, then leases it to the Indianapolis Colts with the stipulation that the DCI logo must remain on the field. That would be fair.

  44. I have no problems with the logo whatsoever; because contrary to your objection, the turf is actually the Indianapolis Colts Football Field in which DCI is leasing and not the DCI Marching Performance Field which the Indianapolis Colts happen to use on occasion.

And only met him a couple of times Hy Drietzer. If you are in drum corps long enough you get to hire your friends. I hired Sal to write for Kilts and Dennis is writing for Govenaires. Gov Love, LP

  46. Sorry, but this post is patently untrue. Boston's design team did NOT add 1812 because Les Mis couldn't fill a full show....the title from the beginning was Revolution, and the design team actually considered pieces from several sources to fill the program. As a matter of fact, Bring Him Home was one of the first things they came to, in terms of a ballad production. Jay's comments need context. As an arranger, he had defnite motifs that he was trying to include in the show, and to "fill" a show and not simply rehash Cadets 89, the group was lookly for specific elements. Jay's point was not that Les Mis couldn't support a full show on it's own..it was that it wouldn't support the full show that HE and the design team were planning. The final product seemed to please alot of people.

  47. I don't think it matters whether they go outside the box or mainstream. They have been successful doing both. Just as successful, in fact. Face it. The Blue Devils success is simply because year in and year out, they are the most consistent drum corps in the activity. There is not a more consistent corps or staff anywhere in the activity. That's a fact. The Blue Devils own the activity. There is not another corps in the activity that is more put together than they are (both on AND off the field). Go ahead and red minus me for saying that. I speak the truth.

  48. I'm not referring to the Cavaliers alone. A lot of these non-G8 corps are out for blood and producing G8 quality shows. Sure the Cavaliers, Cadets, Blue Devils, etc. have amazing programs with tons of longevity, but DCI is a competitive entity. It's like sports. Yes the teams are more consistent than football teams, but it's bound to happen someday when we see a different look to the top 12.
