  3. The Cadets show this year is great. However, I would like to add one Presidential quote (with thanks to President Ronald Reagan)... "Mr. Hopkins, tear down this wall!"

  4. Well....Paul (The kid that was interviewed), came to Cabs I believe in 2009 as a 14 year old kid from Ottawa Ontario with his dad. He made the trumpet line, and had very good marching skills. He marched until 2012, got better as a musician, and better as a marcher and auditioned for Scouts in 2013 and made it on his first try. This is Paul's second year in Scouts and I believe he has 2 more after this year. I had the privilege and honor of housing Paul at my apartment his last year he marched Cabs. Currently, I house his dad (who is our mellophone soloist) along with all of the members from Canada and Vermont (which totals about 10). When he ages out of Scouts, he'll be coming back to Cabs, I'm sure. It was great that he gave us props....he mentioned to someone last night via text message that if it weren't for Cabs, he would not be in Scouts today. All that being said, he's a great kid, i'm extremely proud of him, and could not be happier for him!

  5. I have a feeling that you would love the cadets show if it glorified the tea party. Lets keep the craziness somewhere else okay?

  6. I think it is because it's politics that lie so close to the hearts of many fans. People love a good drama and to incorporate such a drill move and basically center an entire show around making fun of the idea that "all corps are equal but some are more equal than others" is Boston's way of giving the G7 the finger. Personally, I love it, but it's up to each individual to decide how they feel about these politics. Edit: I also don't recall people giving Crown a hard time when they did "A Second Chance" back in 2010. people love an underdog

  7. For everyone doubting Bluecoats right now I remember getting 3rd with a 72.? just 0.1 ahead of phantom in charleston, wv while crown got a 76.? at bloos first show in 2010. The next time Bloo and Crown met the spread got a little bit more uncomfortable for crown. Bloo isn't one to come screaming out the gates and finishing well (2007 anyone?). As far as tonight went I was the Ontario Mills AMC 30 and boy was it loud in there! Speakers almost blew out they were trying to give us volume so much! Cavaliers-Much improved. Definitely enjoyed this one better in the theater than fn. Madison-Trombones sound great! Some cool stuff in there but somethings missing besides their closer. Boston-I love this show! Dark shows are my cup of tea. I hope this pulls ahead and challenges the top 6 once they get the guard's masks and tosses figured out. Phantom-Not sold on this one. I feel like they keep trying to rehash their story telling shows now. I enjoyed Turndot and Juliet but these last two have been a miss for me. Cadets-Strong showing from them this early just like last season. But it's an even year and they haven't medaled in an even year since 2002. But they've never had this great of a show during an even year since 2002 either. Crown-Low brass playing high brass and sounding like that is ridiculous! So many notes and tonguing that would make any woman happy . Changes are coming to make it flow a lot better that's for sure. Bloo-I may have to be content with knowing that I will have been part of the 2nd best Bluecoats to grace the field (2010). I teared up during the ballad and it's barely June! The waterfalls are going to be coming in August that's for sure

  9. I don't post much on here, but love the site. That being said, been an avid drum corps fan since 1996. Just wanted to log on here and say, that in all my time watching drum corps I've never particularly cared for many of Bloo's shows. Parts of their shows yes, but never saw one that I thought was a complete package to get excited about...................that has now changed. I absolutely LOVE this show. Really hoping for a strong finish from this one, if nothing else I think it's going to be a tremendous crowd favorite this year.

  10. I'd been studiously avoiding any videos of them until I could see them last night in the theater. Wow - great, great show. Everything they do is big - massive field coverage, big full brass sound, and that drumline... my favorite part was in the big dramatic push in the closer when they cut to the drumline playing every friggin' note in the world. Narrator was <gasp!> *really* good. Only complaints I had were that the stage is massively underused, and they definitely need the other guard unis to arrive. I've liked a few, and tolerated even more, but this might be the first Cadets show I've truly loved in a long, long time. Mike

  11. Take heart Bluecoats fans. Scores from the first show for the respective corps: 73.2 Blue Devils 72.8 Bluecoats 72.1. Cadets 70.8 Crown It's a marathon, not a sprint.

  12. I detest Cadet's narration. I detest the narrator's little cream tux. Awful. I detest his incessant entrance and exit. Very distracting. I strongly dislike his slightly-too-earnest delivery. I'm sure he's a wonderful human being, but his delivery makes me want to jump out of my skin. I would probably hate the narration less if I didn't like the music and all other aspects of the performance so much. If it weren't for the narration, I would be rooting for this show to win it all. With narration, I don't know if I can sit through it again.

  14. I understand Bostons show now! Animal Farm is based on the concept of "all animals are equal but some are more equal than." this show is about how "all corps are equal but some are more equal than others." This show is a huge middle finger to the g7 and I love it

  15. Some general thoughts and reviews. DISCLAIMER: I am a marching band judge, wind book arranger and designer. You don't care (and rightly so), but as such, a lot of my comments are going to be about design, effect and the arranging. While the theater provides a neat venue, these are things that you really can't evaluate fully in that setting. I'll need to wait until San Antonio next month to catch all of this live. Please don't take any of this personally. VENUE My theater was absolutely packed. It was wonderful to see. They used one of the larger houses for the cast and they filled it! A lot of high schoolers with band directors, alumni from a myriad of corps, and various other fans. Picture quality was excellent. Sound was just the right volume. No complaints here! CAVALIERS I saw this show on the fan network live feed a few nights ago and wasn't impressed. I'm happy to report that in the superior theater venue, this show absolutely sells. This was the audience's second favorite of the night, easily. It's great to see the Cavies start getting back to what they do best. This design isn't going to contend for a medal as it stands, but it will make a play for the Top 6. Percussion is the absolute highlight here. Getting the pit involved to the extent that they do is a masterstroke. The marimba feature drew big applause. The visual package is more ambitious than the past few years and that level of demand is obviously causing some issues here in the early season. Get it clean and I could see it as high as 6th. MADISON SCOUTS OK, Madison. I love you. I really do. But man, I just don't know about this show. For starters, the uniforms. I hadn't seen them before tonight....but ugh. They look like someone raided the costume department over on broadway's Book of Mormon. Those *short sleeve* white shirts with the ties make me think you're about to ask me if you can talk to me about your Lord and Savior. Not an improvement in my opinion. As for the show itself...this is the safest show I've seen this season so far. It feels like the framework of all the obvious Madison "hits", so to speak...but none of the spark or energy that we expect. Visual program is unfocused (and obviously super dirty), the brass book is, I hate to say, kind of uninspired. You play the hell out of it but there's only so much you can do there. The show just doesn't build to "moments", it just sort of flows casually from one idea to the next with no real aim. I'm worried about this one, to be honest. I hope you can build it into something special, but out of the gate it needs a lot of work. The theater crowd didn't really care for it. Not much action out of them. BOSTON CRUSADERS I thought 'ol Rondo was going to have a stammering meltdown. I nearly died laughing. OK Boston, I have concerns. First: That visual program worries the hell out of me. It is super difficult and your members are having a REALLY hard time with it right now. Not a minute went by in the show that I couldn't pick out someone having a near-wipeout collision out there. Foot timing, linear alignment...of course it's early season, but there are *so many* visual hiccups that I'm worried there isn't enough time in the season to address them all. The laboring of the visual responsibilities is even hurting the musical integrity (particularly in the hornline). The arrangements are solid and it's obvious those kids can play, but they are so overwhelmed and worried about drowning in that visual program that they often completely sacrifice musical clarity, failing to portray musical intent. I like that you're doing something different. But I think that visual design might need some re-evaluation come mid-season. We'll see where it is by then. On the other hand, if you actually manage to CLEAN that sucker you'll fight for the top half of finals group. This show has me the most worried so far. Best of luck, BAC. Crowd had NO IDEA how to react to this show...which I found just as funny as Rondo's reaction. PHANTOM REGIMENT Well isn't this just the definition of a Phantom Regiment show? The difference here is that the visual package has picked up considerably. Some nice, beefy arrangements of the Tchaikovsky material really put the whole thing together. This was the first show of the night that felt like a coherent whole from start to finish...which unfortunately might also be a problem. The show feels "complete" as-is, and that is something you definitely DON'T want early-season. If you max this show out, as it stands, you'll find yourselves out of the Top 6. Now, obviously I don't expect there to be no re-tooling. My point here is that you have what I think is the *opposite* problem from BAC: BAC's program feels like it might be too much to pull off, yours feels like it's fitting you like a glove and doesn't have anywhere else to go. Work that Phantom magic and bump the "ooo and aaah" factor and things will be just fine. Crowd reacted with a respectful round of applause. CADETS This is the most traditional show on the field. It's the Cadets doing "AMERICA IS AWESOME" as they are wont to do every decade or so. This was the most "complete" package of the night in terms of all the elements being there. The design is a little safe and I can't help but wonder if they might peak early, but we all know it'll undergo a million versions before they settle. Narration didn't really bother me, although the theater venue wasn't good for it. You often lost the voice in the mix so you couldn't understand what he was saying. Crowd gave this, too, a respectful round of applause. CAROLINA CROWN This show is really bi-polar for me. Neat things happen...then what?....then MORE COOL STUFF....then what?.....it's very disjointed as it stands. Hornline is great. Arrangements: great. Visual program has lot's of bells and whistles but it feels like we're not really tying it all together yet. Happy to report that the percussion is definitely improved for sure. This will contend for a medal come August. I need another read on this show...it is the one probably hurt the most by the theater venue. Crowd response was pretty good. Probably 3rd favorite. BLUECOATS This is it. This is my favorite show of the year. I won't see a better one from a design standpoint. Everything about it works, and it leaves enough space to add on as the season progresses. This show will take you as far as your execution will allow, Coats. That's going to be the key. You absolutely MUST nail the execution of this package for the effect to work. There is no leeway here. If you pull it off, no one will stop you. This was EASILY the crowds favorite of the night. They lost their collective MINDS over this show. The only Standing O of the night. Audible boos when the scores were shown. I had Bloo in 3rd as well...but not by that spread. Feet are a problem right now, which is cutting into the GE score. That drumline is unbelievable. Clean. Clean. Clean. Add and clean. Add more and clean. Come on, Bloo. You can do this.

  16. I feel like this show may pay off big with tweaks. Its incredibly challenging, as someone else said they seem to be slacking on music performsnce right now in order to keep up with the challenging visual program. But i feel it has a higher ceiling than Madison's show, if they can pull it together.

  21. I've been listening to BAC today all day while working! What I especially enjoy about BAC's production this year is there can be so many different personal interpretations and meanings from their show....and also a few obvious ones (G7)...Talk about going for the JUGULAR! I am really enjoying this and can't wait to see them and others in New Haven! The drill design in my opinion is a step up from last year...if they can CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN this break neck drill...this show WILL be a MONSTER come finals. Watch out for WALDO'S ROAR!!!

  23. The worst part of Cadets narration is the "That's what HE said......That is what Abraham Lincoln Said" ....and I realize Copland put this in the original...and that's cool that they are being authentic. HOWEVER, when Copland wrote Lincoln Portrait.... "That's what She said" wasn't on the lips of every prepubescent adolescent in America. I think they'll turn it into a joke. Otherwise I have no problems with the delivery. I'm not a fan of Mount Hopkins at the front of the field, but hey...that's why I'm not a show designer....oh wait I am...hmm. The ending of the show is fabulous. I know several corps change endings and put in new endings throughout the latter weeks of tour....CADETS don't touch this ending!

  26. I am unsure of whether or not this is a joke. looking at the signature, i feel (and fear) it is not a joke. Whether or not you like the current President, his campaign was very populist and therefore popular, at least in 2008. his Yes We Can slogan is forever a part of American history, despite any Bob the Builder jokes we can make. Their show is about "america" and it focuses on several of the most popular presidents in US history, Lincoln, FDR, and JFK. While you can say Lincoln was so popular that half the states tried to secede, I will counter by saying "now-a-days" he is seen as one of the best and most popular presidents we have had (tyranny aside, i am sure you would bring up the whole suspending habeus corpus and other questionable things he did, so be it). Once again, FDR was popular at the time, and is seen very positively today. JFK was adored by his supporters in a way that could only be rivaled by Obama. If anyone wanted to stir controversy they would choose Carter, Taft, and Jackson as their legacies are mixed to negative. Of course, the Cadets aren't the first to have a show that touches, even a little, on politics. even recently. Crossmen had an entire show last year dedicated to "protests" in history. I wonder if your head exploded watching their show. And then we have BAC this year, Animal Farm. A story written by a socialist about stalinism in the soviet union. Socialism! GAH! These kids are no doubt being indoctrinated by the socialist BAC regime. Thomson Vou should be searched for his commie card (joke). Less we forget the name santa clara vanguard, and their fascination with Russian music. How coincidental as marxist-leninist theory provides us with "the vanguard" who are class conscious proletariats that lead the struggle. Sorry for this rant, but its the only way i can use my major. Anyway, now about religion in drum corps. Cavaliers immortal show, really? The show is the devil? Its about vampires. last year their show was about the illuminati. (oh no, NWO). SCV 2010 was about hell. BAC "The core of temptation" was about original Sin. Don't forget BAC "The TItans" were about pagan beliefs. But there is the other side, the pro-christian side as well. Usually people don't complain about it. Cadets are guilty of having pro-christian or pro-religious messages in their shows (if we want to be incredibly picky and care too much). Between Angels and Demons, the Angels always win, and some people came away with the show "inspired". If I remember right, Hop mentioned that he was interested in performing the demons winning ending, but he feared the backlash would be so great that it was never put out there. Probably right, if he had a show where the demons win, all heck may break loose, pun definitely intended. 12.25. While i was not a fan of the show (i get enough christmas music in december to last me until the next december, july is too soon) i always facepalmed at the religious messages in 12.25. Of course, this is necessary (i guess) christmas, CHRIST-mas, the angels and stuff. whatever. Heck, even in their show this year, there is a lot of talk about "faith" in the voice over. pro-religious message maybe? Glassmen, the prayer cycle. Self explanatory right? overt religious themes. If we are going to be picky about bringing politics and religion into drum corps, lets be picky about all things then. If the show can be construed somewhat as being political or religious, it should be canned. every show must be approved by DCI less people walk out of the activity for promoting liberal-populist propaganda, or corrupting the youth to be devil worshipers. That is ridiculous, of course. Unless a corps comes out and says "the only fans we want are members of x party or y religion" or if to march for a corps you have to pass a political or religious test. "You must be at least z amount liberal/conservative to be a marching member of the corps", then i don't care. Cadets can put out their shows, I might facepalm at the religious parts. I might chuckle at any subtle preaching. but in no way will i ever say that their message does not have a place in drum corps. Unless they cross the line, demanding religious or political participation from members. tldr: a lot of shows can be seen as having a political message if you try hard enough. a lot of shows have been pro-christian or pro-religious. we should calm down, unless a corps demands religious participation from members or have a political test to become a member.

  27. Actually, this Cadets show has less to do with politics and more to do with American history and great quotes that we can all be proud of, regardless of party choice and personal beliefs. This is, in part, because these quotes are coming from men WE elected in a free country not run by King and Queen or any sort of dictatorship. The idea behind Lincoln Portrait and the narration (go listen to the source material) is to honor the process of freedom, to pay homage to the American process of allowing a man of the people to be elected president, and that such a man (or women perhaps someday) would guide us in times of growth and despair, through mistakes and great success, and also through words of wisdom and great courage to do the right thing. It's about honoring the highest OFFICE of our great nation, even when we do not agree with the person who occupies that office. This is the least political show on the field, but I can see how some are misinterpreting the actions of the narrator. The show is not trying to cater to democrats or republicans. The show pays homage to great people who served their country, regardless of what you thought of them, and it defines the highest office of the land, in this musical history lesson, as something we should be proud of, regardless of how we voted. My dad always taught me that no matter who was President, ALWAYS respect the HIGHEST OFFICE of the land. It's a tough job and nobody could do it perfectly. You can make a case that the Cadets 2007 show was WAY more political. Boston's G7 formation had more politics in it than this Cadets show.

  28. We were at the Cinecast last night and I can say something positive about every show we saw. We liked them all. However, since I hold the Cadets near and dear to my heart, I have one criticism. Please, please, please change what the narrator is wearing. He's a good looking, extremely tall young man with a magnificent voice and that particular costume or whatever it is you want to call it simply doesn't fit him or the show. He should be wearing something that would "suit" the role of a historian or a teacher of sorts....something more dignified than an ill-fitting, modified Cadets uniform. Of course, this is just MHO. Thanks.

  33. I posted this in the Akron thread, but I wanna bring it over hear since they were my 2nd favorite tonight: Boston Crusaders - First, let me say that I LOVE DARK SHOWS! And this is THE darkest one I've ever seen in drum corps, by far. That said, it is CLEARLY UNFINISHED. But I see the bones, and they're calcium enriched and STRONG. This show right now is music and drill with a couple thematic moments and is filthy dirty. That said, the difficulty they are putting on these performers isn't even on the same level as Madison, they are HAULING ### and playing HARD stuff the WHOLE show. They are ALL over the place from a field coverage standpoint. Clearly not the closer either. But this show is monster, and once and IF they can clean it, watch out, they'll blow right past everyone that's close right now and into the top 6. Once they add show silks, more thematic elements, some re-writes, this could be a monumental show for them. I dunno, I have a gut feeling these guys have tasted blood, and they're out for more. If they clean, they're seriously going to do some damage. Was HUGELY impressed by them tonight despite being the dirtiest, least finished, and the lowest. Boston, BRING IT!

  34. My thoughts on the Cinecast: Cavaliers - LOVE this show! It's pretty bare bones right now, but it's so dark and playful at the same time. Tons of cool stuff, that Marimba feature is off the charts awesome! Drill is great, music is fun, and the overall theme is presented well right now. A pleasant surprise! MILES better than the last two years! Madison Scouts - LOVED the music! Classic Madison, and they sounded great! The visual program was the complete opposite, I'm sorry but that was one of my least favorite visual programs I've seen in awhile. I get what they were saying about the color scheme, and I loved the second half, but eek. They could of done the theme easily without the guy aimlessly walking across the field and doing a couple backflips at the end. And the visual performance wasn't spectacular either, cleaner than Boston, but that was....well I'll get there in a minute. And the all white highlighted that. We'll see, but visually, not a fan at all. Musically, FANTASTIC! Boston Crusaders - First, let me say that I LOVE DARK SHOWS! And this is THE darkest one I've ever seen in drum corps, by far. That said, it is CLEARLY UNFINISHED. But I see the bones, and they're calcium enriched and STRONG. This show right now is music and drill with a couple thematic moments and is filthy dirty. If they clean, they're seriously going to do some damage. Was HUGELY impressed by them tonight despite being the dirtiest, least finished, and the lowest. Boston, BRING IT! Phantom Regiment - It feels like I've seen them, Cadets, and Crown a million times already by watching videos......show is nice, not as bad as I thought on first impression, but I dunno, didn't hit me too hard. I think they performed VERY well tonight and that's what got them that great score, but that happened with The Red Violin, and by finals they were in 9th. There's an absolute bull of a show behind them, even if it was 6 points behind them tonight. The Cadets - I'VE ALREADY SEEN THEM SO MUCH. Great show, like the narration, fantastic performance levels. Contender. Carolina Crown - See the above two. Great job tonight, still feel the field is cluttered. Already stated my thoughts a million times on other threads.......onto THE show: Bluecoats - Holy Mother ####### ####. JESUS this show is AWESOME! Usually when I hype a show this much I'm dissapointed. They BLEW PAST ALL EXPECTATIONS! The show.....oh my God. I love what he said, no underlying meanings, no cheesy storyline's, just a simple theme and FULL ON YOUR FACE DRUM CORPS! Their visual design is their best in YEARS, back to heel first technique, LOVED the guard, the brass is phenomenal, and the percussion is un ####### believable! Rarick and Thrower have absolutely outdone themselves here. Best use of props, electronics, staging I've EVER seen in my opinion. The show is beautifully simplistic, fantastically arranged, and just downright amazing. My new all time favorite show from any marching idiom. As far as winning goes, who gives a ####. When a show made me feel that way I don't give two flying........maybe I should stop cussing now. BLOO! 37. Great brass lines can be defined by so many things. Hardest book, most lyical and most artistic performance, best sound and balance, most technique, best solos, and on and on. For those of you looking to hear some serious demand that compares favorably to today's Carolina Crown, listen to: 1. Star 1990, 91, 92, and 93 2. Blue Devils 1982, 84, 86, 88, and 94 3. Garfield Cadets (The Cadets) 1984, 85, 87, 93, 97, 2001, 2007 - by the way, for sheer notes, go listen to Cadets 1997. WOW, that book and their 1993 book compare in demand to Crown last year. 4. Madison Scouts 1988 - that was a tough book, and the ranges were very demanding 5. Phantom Regiment 1993 (that is a wicked book) and 2003 (another wicked hard book). 6. Carolina Crown 2009, 2012, 2013 And my award for most demanding books I've ever heard: (in order) 1. Star of Indiana 1991 (best combination of technique, tone, lyricism, balance, and power) 2. Carolina Crown 2013 3. The Cadets 1997 4. The Cadets 1993 5. Blue Devils 1988 (smooth but much harder than people think, and the best overall soloists of all time) For tonal blend and melodic shaping listen to: - Star of Indiana 1990 - 1993 - BD 1992, 1993 (a fab line), 1997, 2010 (amazing blend) - Cadets 2001 & 2005 - SCV 1981, 84, 85, 87, 88, 89 (those 80s lines of Vanguard were so well balanced) - Bluecoats 2005, 2007, 20010, 2012, 2013 - Cavaliers 1991, 92, 2000, 2002 (2002 won high brass and 1992 is a wonderful sounding line) - Phantom Regiment 1987, 89, 1991, 1993, 1996, 2008 - Carolina Crown 2007, 2008, 2009, 2013 My most musical, lyrical, and best blended hornlines of all time: 1. Star of Indiana 1991 2. Blue Devils 2010 3. Star of Indiana 1990/Carolina Crown 2013 4. Cavaliers 1992/2002 5. SCV 1985

As for the comments about Madison and Cadets, I'll just assume you have no knowledge of brass quality, or you were taught by morons because your opinions are just plain ####### stupid. I can't even respect them as opinions because they lack reality and intelligence on any level.

  42. No. Blue stars 2013 was an all new staff and they went from out of finals into finals and with the same staff they are now moving up.

  43. Really? Seems like you're the one putting your own spin on. To have a reaction like that to a presidential quote is simply not normal or healthy.

  47. 1. Bluecoats - wow. Pure effect, rather than attempts at "meaning" anything. If I were BD, Cadets, or Crown, I'd be concerned about this mother coming up from behind and mugging me starting in late July. 2. I feel like I've gotten everything out of Cadets show I'm ever going to get. They do it well - I'm just not that interested in "yes we can, we're Americans, d___mit." We can't fix basic elements of governing the country these days, so maybe I'm just not in the mood for optimistic bromides about how good we are at things, especially when other nations kick our nutsacks on every major front except for homicides, bankruptcies, and obesity. Nuff said. 3. Crown. The show has no shape. Cool effects, and a much improved percussion section, but I find myself checking the watch 5 or 6 minutes into it. 16th note ensemble horn licks for their own sake don't interest me anymore than Sun Ra's music interests me. 4. PR. I've seen this show from them before. Many times. 5. Cavaliers. MUCH improved in every facet. According to the recaps, they tied Bluecoats for first in Percussion, yes? Uniform changeback is appreciated. They'll be battling it out with Santa Clara for the 5 spot, make book on it. 6. Scouts. Love the organization, wanted to like the show. Choppy, boppy, and not marched well. The trombone ensemble in the Kenton piece is buried under the pit writing. 7. Boston. Some interesting things going on. If they can clean it, they'll have a succes d'estime that people will look back on fondly as having pushed some envelopes. That's not a bad thing, necessarily. Overall, this is the strongest opening to a season I can ever recall. Every single corps I've seen has something to bring to the table, and the level of preparedness tonight was impressive. Lastly, Tom Blair or someone on the production staff; get those pleated front khakis away from Rondo, and put him in some pants made in this century. and to all a good night.

  48. Only that you pretty much nailed it, I think. The interesting thing about vinyl was that, regardless of stylus, the coefficient of sliding friction demanded a wearing away of some of the surface with each play. This would effect high frequency information in greater proportion and result in the disc ultimately "wearing out" to the point where the loss of clarity would become obvious even to the casual listener. That's why we obsessives had to buy multiple copies of the Skyliner and Cabs albums to allow for the countless plays of Martin, Swan, Simpson, D'Amico and Angelica solos required to learn them "off the record".
